Hi all,

I have a question concerning my oldest son (11), we just got a

diagnosis of ADHD and I need to know what to do next regarding his classes and

school. I did submit a written request to have him tested for a learning

disability. ADHD is something I am not familiar with. His psychologist is

sending us

back to his primary Dr. to start med's. I could use advice on that to. How

does this work with the schools do I call with his new Dx and wait or request

an IEP? whew. I have lots of research ahead of me.

My oldest has ADHD as well. We had her tested privately to determine this. I

contacted the school's Guidance Councilor to decide our course of action. In

Fairfax County, VA, you can have a 504. You can put accommodations for you

child in this document (sit close to the teacher, chew gum, give more time for

test taking, whatever accommodations your child needs).

Ditto. Both my older boys were dx'd with adhd late (Joe was 22, n,

17). Even though Bren wasn't dx'd until his senior year in high school, we

made accomodations for him at his very academically challenging high school

from his freshman year on. They tested him and called it " unique learning

style " , therefore he got the adaptations in school. However, they were wrong,

and we had him tested privately. It was funny, because even though he

had the accomodations before, it still made a huge difference actually having

the dx. For him, it brought huge validation, and of course, the meds

changed his life. But even the teachers and the entire staff looked at him

differently. Suddenly, they were like...OH, YEA, NOW I get it. Sheesh!!!

This is another reason why getting dx'd is so important.

The things we did for n were extended time on tests, weekly contact

with teachers via email to discuss progress as well as making sure we were aware

of all assignments, extra help from the teachers if he needed it, a day

planner and help with organizing all his tests, grades and homework.

n

is a brilliant kid (now 20), and many teachers recognized that....however

some didnt' understand the dx. He went to a private school, and a lot was

expected of him......so we met with all his teachers often so they knew where

we stood. I recall wanting to slap a couple over the years....er, Duff

almost did once!!!!! So along with your new information and changes you'll

make, add patience to your list!!!!

Joe was already out of school when he was dx'd, but the meds turned his life

around too. He's back in college getting A's now.

Good luck,

Donna

,

I would call the school. Let them know. And also contact his teachers

immediately. Also notify the school counselor. And if you start meds,

you'll have to contact the nurse as well. It's a lot of work, but such good

news that you are all aware now. Keep the lines open with your son too.

Let him talk about it with you, and often.

medication route. For us, it was a God send. You might have to keep tinkering

till you get the medication right but for us Lena's grades shot up and she was

much more pleasant to be around. There are many good books out there. One did

say it was like having a child with special needs. I had a good laugh thinking

clearly they never met a kid with a dual diagnosis of DS/PDD. In the grand

scheme of things the modifications you need to make are much easier to deal

with. Good luck
