After they reviewed Dylan's history & spent 2 hours with us, they came back & said that they believe that Dylan has autism as well as down syndrome! I didn't expect a diagnosis today, as it was an initial evaluation & they said not to expect a diagnosis in the letter. But, I feel so relieved in a way, that it's not just us not being to handle him or something. I don't know how many people are *happy* to finally hear someone say their child has autism, but it's such a relief to know there is something beyond the ds. They asked why I was pursuing finding out if he had additional diagnosis' & I said I thought it would open more doors & help give me the *power* to get him what he needs at school. She said that it will open doors & help us get him more help with communication & social skills & make them look beyond the cognitive delay & passing everything off on that when we work on his IEP. I know that's a battle ahead of us as well, but just to have the paper that says it, I think, will help us. Becky mom to Dylan, 10, DS/Diabetes/ADHD & now I can say ASD for sure instead of with a question mark! Becky, Sorry I missed your original post but I'm glad you had a good result from Waisman center. Now for tackling your school district. Have you had any experience using FACETS. They do advocacy work with parents dealing with school districts.
