Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for something new Isaiah has

started doing. First, I think we're finally at the right dosage of meds for

him. His self talking seems to finally be under control, he still does it, but

not constantly.

The problem is that he seems to have replaced that with stomping his feet

constantly, or putting his foot on his desk and tying his shoe as tight as he

can, then making knots in the laces. Sometimes he even comes home with his

sleeves from his jacket tied in knots.

I was going to talk to his OT, to see if she has something weighted to put

across his lap. Maybe this will give him the sensory input he's getting from

stomping. As far as the tying goes, I'm not sure what to do. Any suggestions

would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Have you thought about getting him some of that rexlace they use to make

keychains and teaching him how to make things using his hands? It would give

him something constructive to do with his hands instead of tying other things

into knots and then he would have something that he made and can keep it or

give it as gifts.

I'm not sure if this will help, but maybe try velcro

sneakers for now until the issues subside. Because

he's replaced one thing with another, it definitely

seems like he's seeking some sort of sensory input to

satisfy the behavior. The weights on his lap, or even

a weighted vest (if that's appropriate)? I would ask

his OT for additional tips. Good luck!

They aso have weights for shoes in the Abilitations Catalog. They velcro onto

the shoe laces I think.

Take care,

Thanks for the suggestions. We thought about velcro, but we figured he'd

probably get a kick out of hearing the velcro pull apart, but his teacher

wouldn't. If we can't help him get it under control, we're considering slip-on

shoes.

I never thought about the keychains. My niece is really into that right now.

I'll ask her if she'd like to try to teach him. It can't be much harder than

learning to tie his shoes, can it?

He's got a week off for Spring break, so we'll see what his OT comes up with

for when he goes back. Thanks again!

We find that when Elie is upset, that he can " ground " himself with a few

different activities. :

Jumping on the trampoline or just off one step helps. Also doing deep joint

compressions - especially in his arms and wrists stops the hand flapping.

He also will sit in a deep cushioned chair, put a pillow on his lap and

cross his legs. HE enjoys sitting sideways in a dark, little closet with a

milkcrate or pillow on his lap.

He also wears shoes with velcro closures - women's size 5.5 wide.

Sara - Choose to make lemonade, not complain about the lemons.

Hi ,

I hope something works for you. The only thing I'd worry about the slip on

shoes is the whipping off of the slip on shoe - at least with it would

be like that! Whee, crash - there goes the shoe! LOL!

I didn't realize you have two children with Ds, I must have missed that all

along. I hope you don't mind my asking but are they both biological? Sorry if

you've posted this before.

Also, what state are you in? Again, missed that! (doesn't take much!)

Take care and good luck with the knots, etc...

Jayne

(you know he could become quite the boyscout with knots!) :-)

Hi Jayne,

Both and Isaiah are my biological children. With Jess we found out

about the DS before she was born. With Isaiah, the blood work confirmed it

after he was born. It didn't come as a surprise to me, because something inside

me told me he would have DS. It's funny the autism diagnosis didn't surprise me

either, I just knew it even when no one else would acknowledge it. Anyway were

from Phoenix, AZ. Where we finally got some much needed rain! It had been 143

days w/o it.
