Guest guest
Hi Irma, The accomodations for 's communication can be endless with some initiative and cooperation, however, you need to insist and get the school's cooperation. They have come to the end of their denial road. It is amazing what you can accomplish with networking supports. You now have a very supportive network and certainly will not be alone any longer. It would be a very good idea if your sister would go with you, if only to be in charge of the tape recorder. It will enable you to focus on the issues. You can do this. I firmly believe you can be tough for one hour, an hour that will make a difference in the rest of 's life. I am leaving you with that thought. I arrived late from running around once I had returned from my trip out to Austin and ended up probably going to bed close to wee hours but my mind has been spinning million miles away as I could not sleep to begin my mission with all you had shared, the advocate from the advocacy agency. But now get this, I have a professor (he is the Autism Council regional Advisory Committe chair for the Panhandle in Texas) who is willing to travel out here to battle too when it comes to mediation or just to come down, he was dead serious too and get the school going with helping meet his communication goal, he had also told me to make sure that I write this down on the IEP, which I was so excited but did not actually hear the word to word on how he told me. Gee, I which I had a brain. Ok, a photographic one. Anyways, he said to make sure it is written that " I invite Dr. .......to help teach and staff on training them to meet his communication goals. This was after the Texas council meeting my friend Martha, chair of SA, we ended up going to a little cafe and he ended up adding on that this is what I should do and you're obviously going to relate to it as you've told me some of the same thing. Develop a book of . Glossary, utterance that has meaning extensive as possible, what did they mean? etc. Contact the Deaf Education Program or a Deaf club for more information and of course I have made a file of what everyone has shared for if ever this time came and have a large book of the ASL. Told me that if they tell me " signing is not universal " , they are wrong it is universal and what you had menioned better than silence. Take photos of , using sign language and place them on a key- ring to wear around easy to use to make his needs and wants known. Yesterday evening could not wait to try it out and so now I have my first pic of on photo signing " more " . Ok, then for backup the visual supports, using as he called it " soft technology, he could wear an apron like those found for the tools at a hardware dept. to take pictures out at school was just one of the examples as he had shared several of them. Just to get him started when the basics needs for now. A handkerchief folded in 4, then mark with large Yes, No, sorry mind went blank with the other 2. Then at the Workshop on Thursday the speaker Anne Hoffman and 2 other education consultant where suggesting some info too. The workshop was on Teaching Nine Critical Communication Skills for Children with Autism and Related /disabilities developed by S. bondy, Ph.D. & Lori Frost, M.S., CCC/SLP. Gee, with so much to build from I've started to get with it on this battle and focusing on and nothing else but I just pray I get through this. I had mentioned this to my sister so she could attend the ARD meeting with me as for now I was planning on attending alone, just hope it works out for her to attend. If mediation then I know I will not be alone to battle this. The nerves. Ok, still working on the proposal agenda. Until later, thanks!
