Hi Gigi,

It's an IEP(individual educational plan) meeting with the team members that

teach , OT, speech therapist, teacher, special ed teacher, school principal

etc. I forget different states use different acronyms.

Charlyne, thanks. Sorry, my name is Gigi. What exactly is a PPT meeting? I

have not heard that one before.

Re: hello, I am new to this group/'s Mom

Hi 's Mom,

You forgot to mention your name, welcome. The school's psychologist is entitled

to her opinion but cannot disregard the diagnosis of a medical dr if he has

clearly stated in writing that 's primary diagnosis is autism. I would ask

the dev ped to clearly write a report defining 's primary diagnosis as

autism. You can also request that the dev ped give you a written medical order

for ABA. I would request a PPT meeting and present the report defining the

primary diagnosis. You then have the legal authority to ask that 's ID be

changed to autism. Under federal and state guidelines, IDEA 2004, one label is

sufficient. If at that time the school psychologist and the PPT team disregard

the medical diagnosis you have legal options to persue the issue further.

Getting a medical order for an educational program is a long shot but it may get

the services. I have used this strategy in the past when all else has

failed and have had good results. If you have the autism label

you can appeal to a local autism group to help pair you with another parent,

advocate and or autism professional to assist you in the PPT process to get the

appropriate services. I hope this helps.

Hi-

I joined this group because my son has a dual diagnosis,

received last September. He is now 5 1/2 years old. I am having great

difficulty with the local Intermediate unit in regards to obtaining

the recommended ABA, autistic support type classes his developmental

pediatrician says he needs to make progress. He is currently in a

multiple disability type pre-school where I think he is floundering,

it has a very general type of curriculum. The IU psychologist says

that in her opinion he has a primary diagnosos of MR related to the

Down Syndrome, that autism is secondary, and that " there is a fine

line between MR related to Downs or autism " , and that she is neither

agreeing nor disagreeing with my Dr's. diagnosis. But they will not

recommend the same level of schooling, therapies, etc. that any other

typical child with autism would be eligible for.

Seems to me from what the IU psych said that it is not easy to

properly diagnose an " order " to MR, Downs, autism, so its only

her " professional " opinion against my medical doctors opinion. I am of

half a mind to say this amounts to discrimination against individuals

with DS.

Is anybody out there having similar problems seeking appropriate

schooling for their child? I would appreciate any advice. I live in

lower Bucks COunty in PA.

Thanks a bunch
