Guest guest
The behaviorist at Mics school told me that most of the autistic kids have these issues with hair, nails and doctors. They do it for alot of them. Its the handling for Mic.Mic has had fundiplication surgery and he gags getting hair cuts my dh reminded me. I dont know if its a good idea to have them cut his hair.Gagging can cause damage to the fundo.Nice to know Steve was listening he reminded me of the gaging especially with the hair cuts youd think we were cutting his fingers off. Guest guest
Re: the haircuting...We have always had a family friend cut Gene's hair..either in her home or ours. It was always horrible until about age 11 or 12 and then he started to handle it better and sit without us having to hold him in place. That head is so sensitive. There is the water spraying, the cutting sound, sometimes the razor buzzer thing. For a while there I hugged him during his haircuts. We bribed him too with Mcs afterward. But in the end, he is pretty good about it now. Seems like it was something he needed to grow out of. Guest guest
Oh how I hope so! I used to think if he was a girl it would be easier, I'd just let it grow. But I can't imagine trying to comb or brush the hair let alone do a hairdo on someone as averse to hair touching as . Thanks for the hope Lauri, Jayne Only 4 + years til 11.... Guest guest
Jayne, You are right...combing long hair would be real trouble. Even now we don't really comb Gene's hair except during those cuts ( while he scrunches up his face as if in pain ). After we wash his hair, we usually just do a once through with our fingers as a comb and even then he doesn't like that. I have come to think about this whole haircut and combing thing as something that is physically painful for him. I noticed too after many years that in the bathtub he would always scream when he needed his hair washed. Then, one day, I figured it out. He needed the hair wash water much cooler than the bath water. Now, washing it isn't as troublesome either but that temp needs to be just right! Lauri Jayne Hickey wrote: Oh how I hope so! Guest guest
prefers the water to be cooler too - I think his head is just so overly sensitive to things including temperature. The funny thing is that he'll put his head under the spout or pour water over his head ON HIS OWN but if I try to do it - scream! Sometimes I can get him to play a game but usually it just involves dumping cups of water over him and counting down to the last one. Sometimes he'll take a shower with his sister and she'll let him dump water over her head then she'll dump some over his, etc. and she'll get his hair washed - very helpful! The other strange thing is that loves the hair dryer. I can get his hair close to dry and somewhat organized if I dry his hair after a shower or bath. I just keep it moving so it doesn't get too hot for him. take care, Jayne Lauri Stein wrote: Jayne, You are right...combing long hair would be real trouble. But in the end, he is pretty good about it now. Seems like it was something he needed to grow out of. I cut Maddie's beautiful long dark blonde hair. It used to be brutal to cut her hair, or brush it. I can't bribe her with Mc's because she doesn't comprehend the *bribing* concept, plus she doesn't like Mc's......;-) Instead, I make it fun.....I make funny sounds, giggle, cheer, we cut doll's hair, big sister's hair (pretend)....it works. Same thing with fingernails (although NOTHING works for toenails...we just have to be quick--get in an out). As for brushing, I found this VERY expensive tangle-free hairbrush called the Mason-Pearson.....we used it for a few years. Then one day while xmas shopping at Walmart, I found a $5 hairbrush that works even better...go figure!! Laurie, one of the boys with autism in Maddie's class gets his nails and hair cut at school too. His parents simply can't do it; he's too big. Guest guest
Jayne and Laurie, also had the nissen and I remember the gagging when he was over stressed. He doesn't really do it now. Of course he had the nissen when he was three and he is no 17 so has kind of outgrown the nissen. I know when he had a bowel obstruction he certainly threw up. The only way I have been successful with kids who were so upset by their hair cuts was to do a REALLY slow desensitization. I always used the clippers because it eliminates the need for much skill in cutting and is safer than trying to get a scissors next to a kid. I start with the clipper in the room while the child is watching a favorite video. Then to the clipper on and on a towel in the room always paired with a favorite activity that they can do when I am eventually cutting their hair. Then to holding it my hand. I am talking really slow like weeks here with doing it several times a day. Then work up to coming near them, then cutting just a few tips of hairs to cutting a little shorter, never actually touching their scalp with the trimmer until they are ready. It is really slow and you may have some funny looking hair cuts for quite a time but eventually it works. And yes, it generally gets easier as they get older. Then comes the day that they decide to do their own hair and look out.LOL!!! Karyn In a message dated 1/11/2006 10:15:48 AM Central Standard Time, writes: Oh how I hope so!
