Guest guest
Carol Thank you so much for the welcome. It will be nice to be able to discuss things with people who understand. As I said I have four children..My oldest son Nicky..is 18, he joined the Army back in August. great kid..or man I should say. Next my oldest daughter Kayla she is 15 and is active in the Marine JROTC in school. My 5 yr old daughter Kira is an incredible mind...I dont think there is enough information for her to fill that big brain lol. Then there is Danny, he is three. I suspected autism for quite sometime, in the beginning because there were no words, not even mama....he still does not call me mama. I waited because my oldest son did not talk a lot until after he was 2. But he took off with the vocabulary shortly after. I waited until danny was 2 1/2 before I took him in and had him evaluated. we did all the normal things ..audiology, speech pathology, genetisists, etc. It is funny how most professionals side step around the idea of developmental disorders...I suppose it is a touchy subject for some. All i wanted was to get the correct help for him asap. My husband was in denial, which made it harder...him thinking little Danny would just snap out of it. the day after his diagnosis my husband quit his job and joined the army. there is so much more..but I will stop here for now. One thing I will say though is Danny is spectacular,he amazes me every day, and I wouldn't have him any other way......Tammy

Guest guest
Thank you very much Jayne, we are in Southern California. My son is at Fort Rucker in Alabama doing his AIT, He is going to be an Aviation Operations specialist. And yes Kira constantly has questions lol, I look tons of stuff up, just to make sure I have the right answers, she teaches me I guess. Yes my husband had a very hard time when Danny was diagnosed. He could deny it when I just suspected autism but was different story when he was diagnosed by professionals, no more denial. I think that is why he joined Army to get away. My other kids are all very helpful with him and show the same excitement I do when he does a new sign or says something that sounds close to a word...they are all great and i am blessed...Tammy

Guest guest
if you have any questions ask away. Does Danny use a communication device, I read where you mentioned sign, Trisha uses sign as well. She also has a communication device and the use PECS/Pics at school with her. I sure wish you guys could hear her when she says please or some of the other words that sound so good to my ears only because I have waited so long to hear them from her. The one word she has been using for about 4-5 years now is Moma to the point I'm ready to change my name. She will say moma and then nothing else and I will say what and she will just say moma again and this goes on forever it seems lol. But recently she has been saying other things and it is so wonderful to hear them. Sometimes you have a hard time understanding some of the words and sometimes I have no clue what she says but she keeps trying and we use other methods to back her up. She herself seems to be more comfortable with signing though. Carol Trishasmom She isn't typical, She's Trisha! If you always do what you always did, you'll always get what you've always gotten. Guest guest
danny signs some words, like please, daddy and mama, he associates the sign daddy with daddy, and please with knowing it gets him what he wants lol, i bought a baby wordsworth dvd which incorporates signing with the word and the object, and although I know he is just echoing and copying what is being signed and said, all is progress to me. funny you said that sometimes you would like to change your name, I have felt that way about my other kids sometimes, hearing mama non stop, but anticipate danny calling me mama. he just started preschool last week and will be learning all sorts of ways to communicte. his teacher deals mainly with autistics, and there are only 5 others in the class, all severly autisitc as well..its very exciting...Tammy
Guest guest
Jayne, danny just began preschool last week, he was getting help from the regional center, with speech therapy and had a teacher come here twice a week, but he turned three in December so school disrict had to take over, he is in a great class with a great teacher. As far as it being hard to have my son far away, it is but am so happy that he made such a big life decision early. my husband is still finishing basic in south carolina. he joined day after my son was diagnosed...Tammy

Guest guest
Hi Tammy, Welcome to the list. My husband is in the Air Force and we live in Virginia. Where in California are you? We were stationed in Sacramento and Merced back in the late 80's...both bases are closed now! But funny time has marched on...LOL! I'm sure you are so proud of all your children- they sound very responsible. And I'm sure Kira keeps you busy with the " why " questions - LOL. I imagine she's a wonderful example of peer modeling for Danny. Did your husband have a hard time when Danny was diagnosed with Ds? I know I had a much harder time with the autism diagnosis than the Ds. I guess I felt like I really had no control over the Ds occuring but somehow felt I may have done something to make the Autism appear. I know now that I didn't do anything, it's just the cards we were dealt. But you are right, I wouldn't change - he's just perfect to me! Take care, Jayne Mom to 3 including 6 1/2 Ds/Autism Spclkitty35@... wrote: Carol Thank you so much for the welcome. It will be nice to be able to discuss things with people who understand. Guest guest
Ft Rucker yes, we were stationed in Alabama in 2001. Must be hard having your baby so far from home. What is your husband doing in the Army, is he deployed? I was asking if your husband had a hard time when Danny was diagnosed with Down syndrome but I see now from a previous post that Danny doesn't have Ds - sorry I was confused. I'm sure it's been really hard with the official diagnosis of Autism. For all of us on this list we had the diagnosis of Down syndrome and then the Autism came along. Either way, Autism is no walk in the park. Hang in there. My kids get so excited about all the new things does too. I think they are such better citizens from having a sibling with a special need, they are far more compassionate and understanding of people's differences. That's something you can't learn just from a book. Does Danny get school services? I'm sorry if you've said already.
