Guest guest
I know when my youngest son, who has Aspergers, first started having seizures at age 5, the first medicine he was placed on was Topomax. When he took this, he lost 10 lbs in one week because he refused to eat. I found this to be unacceptable and returned to the neurologist, who then placed him on Depakote. When he took Depakote, I thought I was placed in The Shining...his mood was absolutely unmanageable, he was violent, and it was very scary. When we returned to the neurologist, the student doctor tried telling us that Depakote would not cause personality changes such as we were describing. The neurologist finally said that if a child has " psychiatric disorders " that Depakote could indeed cause severe mental problems. Currently, he is on Lamictal, which he is successful with, although there is the risk of a fatal rash developing. My older son is taking Dilantin and Keppra, which is working pretty well for him, but one of the side effects of Keppra is excessive hair growth. Guest guest
I just have to say that I thank god everyday my son doesn’t have seizures. Guest guest
Those neuros lie like rugs, huh? Only cause side effects with underlying psychiatric disorders? Aside from the insult of calling autism a " psychiatric disorder " , what a crock. The same exact side effects show up in drug trials among people with no underlying condition. Not everyone develops the same side effects but those effects don't necessarily hinge on there being a " psychiatric disorder " in the first place-- though the drugs can cause psychiatric disorders. True, though, that because Depakote is believed to be one cause of autism, I guess it could conceivably worsen behavior in children already damaged by mercury because mercury and Depakote (and some chemo drugs) induce the same types of effects on the brain. Too bad neuros can't admit this-- though they'd have to wake up and smell the coffee first re vaccine injuries. Very frustrating. > > I know when my youngest son, who has Aspergers, first started having > seizures at age 5, the first medicine he was placed on was Topomax. > When he took this, he lost 10 lbs in one week because he refused to > eat.
