Guest guest
<<Jake is now starting to read some sight words. Spells them out, then says the words. Funny, he can't often times get the words out and yet he can read them! >> Hi, Everyone...Holly...this was Gareth at that age. He could read a sentence out loud, but could not turn around and say the sentence without looking at the words. At that time, we were just getting the " A " diagnosis and I have since learned that this is common for autistic kids.....that little short circuit in the brain that prevents spontaneous speech. If he is spelling, that is great, too. Keep pushing that because nowadays when we don't understand Gareth, he will spell the word for us. It's amazing his ability to spell words that he can't even say!!! It's like he looks inside his brain for a word bank and reads it while he spells the word out to you. 9/10 times he spells the word correctly, too. It's like he has a photo shot of the word in his head. FWIW....Gareth also rode in the shopping carts....with all the groceries, etc. piled on top of him. He loved it and I know that is what 'he wanted' me to do. When he got too big for me to pick up and put in the cart, then I did what others did.....push the cart to the van door and let him climb in. It was times like that when I was thankful that Gareth had the DS look....to many it was OK and cute. If he was a normal kid, at age 8-10ish crawling into carts, I think people would have been giving me dirty looks!!! Take care, Everyone.
