Guest guest
Mic is trying to dress Mommy. We are showing Mic the potty and dressing so mama was on the potty and Mic ran right in and started pulling up my pants for me. Oh I laughed so hard.He was cute and so serious and so proud of himself.I am shocked me joining OT at school allows me to carry over at home.I could not for the life of me teach Mic anything the first time. Its like he doesnt believe me until someone else does it.I dont care how we get there as long as we move ahead.YEAH!!!! I will be showing up at school more if they allow it.Mics pegs book has many categories and pictures. Ready to start. I know this is not gonna be easy at home I can tell by the look on his face when he sees the book. WORK thats what hes thinking. Irma thanks for the great info as usual.Does anybody know where I can go to look at asst. tech, communication boards I would like to get an idea of what they consist of before they choose one for him. Time to sit down with Steve and Mic and teach them step one pecs.Mic already knows it but Steve doesnt. I am hoping to make this fun but am already anticipating non compliance.Poor Steve HA! Have a nice weekend everyone. Laurie
Guest guest
Hi Laurie, What a wonderful feeling when you see him doing things and of course when he is expressing happiness. Read up on Floortime, this sounds like what Mic could also benefit from, ask the OT if she has some paly activities with similar modeling. I know it was your potty but for Mic it was learning around a natural environment and he can learn. Its always being a detective to see what works. I'll be glad to also email you later with some activities. I too, use to model for too. When I was done, then told him " your turn " and he did and take it from there. Do not worry about anything else like he is a boy watching you blah blah when sharing to those who do not walk in our shoes because its just making the connection and then you shape it to the appropriate level. Send me your snail mail and I'll be glad to send you a video and copies of PECS along with a data sheet that is pretty helpful. Dh could watch it on his own time, plus you could review it when needed too. One of those add to your collections. Better get, have an autism support group to attend and it'll about Music therapy. Guest guest
Just my little two cents here. We started our pecs system in our kitchen. Basically, it was a large poster board hanging on the wall. We put all things related to Jake (what he can eat, what he can play with, activities, etc) on this board with Velcro. When Jake wants to make his point, he goes to the board and gets his picture. Many things Jake already signs for. But just in case I don't understand, or he thinks I didn't hear him, ha! he goes for the picture. We try to limit the items on the board to acceptable things. WE make sure the pictures for food are actually available, and if we don't have juice, we don't have it up. It makes it less confusing to him. Plus, we started with only a few things that Jake consistently did, or ate. This helped reinforce that if he used the pecs he got what he wanted. I try not to give him too many choices. He can have milk, or juice. He can have cereal or bagel. We can go to the park or Mc's. etc. We also do not talk to him all the time in complete sentences. We may start in sentences but then we end up just saying Jakey Potty. Jakey night night. Jakey eat. Shoes on, Go bye bye. etc. He seems to follow this better than when we say too many words in a sentence. Holly something cute Mic is trying to dress Mommy.
