Guest guest
Hi Irma, I think writing a social story for for the school to use if this situation occurs is a great idea but I would also attach a short statement directly to the staff about how and why the situation occured and ways to avoid any of these issues. Zeb is very big and hefty too. I understand how these problems can happen. Zeb started jr high school last tuesday. Overall he had a very good week. After endless hours of not so pleasant meetings with the jr high staff this spring, Zeb's transition was quite successful. Zeb is the first student with intellectual disabilities to be fully included in the jr high school. The school principal wasn't exactly overjoyed and was basically told if he chose not to include Zeb he would be giving his reasons to a hearing officier and face a possible lose of career. The school district would be testifying on Zeb's behalf in any court proceedings. The school district had 120 teachers and the administration from that school attend yet another inclusion training taught by the state dept of sped during the summer. The principal had the choice of having this training before school ended last June but he chose to make all these teachers interrupt their summer vacation in mid August to attend this training. It was his way of having control and certainly creating a climate of staff resentment against Zeb. I think it backfired. I have had glowing remarks from all Zeb's teachers. They all commented what a great kid he is. I have a few issues to straighten out but nothing major. Overall Zeb likes the school and everyone is very nice to him including this principal. He and my grandaughter are in the same team and are able to eat lunch together. I will be leaving for a few weeks working the last big fair so I am holding my breath that all goes well. I was asked to attend an advocacy training to get the soon to be needed requirements for national standards. I will be going to tomorrow. Good luck on your training workshop. Let me know how it went. I hope your back is ok considering all the back issues you have had in the past. does communicate. He may not have the speech but he does use other means. He gets his point across. Give these parents this information regarding communication issues. They need to hear that piece too. > Charlyne > Mom to Zeb 12 DS/OCD/ASD? -------------------------------------------------- Checkout our homepage for information, bookmarks, and photos of our kids. Guest guest
Hi Irma, Getting to tap your shoulder is a wonderful idea. Does tapping your shoulder mean that he wants to leave an area? I did have a new sitter for Zeb while I was working. Honestly I can't tell you if it was a better move. The old sitter sat in a chair glued to the tv set. The new sitter ran the roads and touched everything she was told not to. My kitchen cabinets are all arranged, grrr. I am still looking for my things. She rearranged all my sheets mixing the queen, full and twins all together. Zeb was late for school everyday. She took him to school in shorts with no coat one morning. The temp was 48. The school principal was furious. I have no idea where and how I am going to find another sitter but it will be a priority this year. I took Zeb to the fair with me, missing one day of school and the other a teacher in service day which I also took the two older grandchildren. I let them go to the amusement area and do the rides without me. They were all tagged with the fair picture IDs and my stand name.It is a quiet area during the day. Zeb stayed with them and did well. It was a perfect environment to give Zeb independence and responsibility. Except has enjoyed entering several places with me, especially when its for whatever new CD or DVD that is out and I end up using a visual pic of it and he likes to carry it. What a MO. So I'm able to redirect him to help push the cart. I do not know if you had read that I had a couple of falls and this was one area that I needed to work around on getting to initiate. I've finally learned a new technique for for him to learn initiation and this is teaching " tap my shoulder " when he wants or needs something. Its all baby steps right now but well worth it. Yep, never know which day will be good or bad. Hope Zeb is doing well and what about the sitter who watched him, is she still around? I know you probably already responded to this back when, but I'm just catching up to reading some of the messages while I was limited on reading and recovering well these days. Irma,17,DS/ASD > > Hi Irma, > Yes, certainly a lifesaver but he grew,LOL. Zeb still hates to shop so I try to catch him on those good days or shop during school hours. > Charlyne > Mom to Zeb 12 DS/OCD/ASD? > -------------------------------------------------- Checkout our homepage for information, bookmarks, and photos of our kids.
