Guest guest
Jake came home from the hospital like a typical child. We were lucky, no heath issues at birth. We quickly called the Early Intervention people, they gave us lots of information, including the name of a lady who quickly became my friend. When and I first talked she said " My child is not like other kids with DS. She does not talk, does not communicate, and is much more severe than most children with DS. " Time went by and I started attending a wonderful support group. It was hosted by the school district and was for anyone who had a child with special needs. We had young and old Moms, sometimes Dads, and people had children of all ages with special needs. One of my first meetings I brought some information that I had acquired. This is the Disability Solutions newsletter/pamphlet I had talked about earlier. Anyway, was quietly reading through the articles and all of a sudden said " Good God, Amber is autistic! " She was floored. Her daughter had all the signs and after about a year of working on a dual diagnosis.....She got it! What a difference. The behavior specialist explained to her that the Autism was her primary disability. The DS was secondary. It really helped in her direction for school, home, and understanding of why her daughter was the way she was. All these years later and I am still going back to that Dual Diagnosis newsletter written by Dr. Capone. Amazing! Just wanted to share. Guest guest
For those of you who have never seen this web site or received their information. Here is the link. I think this site has lots of great information especially for those who are not " typical " . They also have a great newsletter series on sexuality. It is all very informative.
