Guest guest
I do not know if this will help at all, but my son hated taking showers also. He would do it if he could wear his swim sit, googles and shampoo hat. The later is like a polyfoam/ rubber vizer that keeps the soap out of ones eyes. a/Cindi/Florence/showers in the am << have two questions i need hlep with, first, how long should i give nathan b4 we decide its not working at the middle school? Its only been abut 2 weeks. he has been with this associate for over a month so i dont think its her. >> Hi, Everyone....a....Did have behavioral issues like this before the Aricept? If not, then I take Gareth off any med that causes negative behaviors....especially if it is so early on in the trial period. I refuse to wait for a drug to 'kick in' if it is already causing a negative reaction. Why put through that if it is not his normal demeanor? We tried Gareth on Aricept yrs. ago and I so no change in behavior, speech, or memory. As for the shaving, G's been doing it for a couple of yrs. He uses an electric one.....does a pretty poor job, but we will 'clean' him up every couple of days or so. <<I have tried other autism forums and this is the most active one I have come across.>> Cindi...that's because we all sit around all day tossing Bon Bons in our mouths!!! Just kidding!!! <<I just wrote out the word 'gumpshun' and put it on my wall. Kinda says it all for me. Thanks, Florence >> Let me know if it works for you....maybe I should do that, too!!! FWIW.....mornings like today, just make me want to crawl in a hole and tune out the world. How can Gareth be so anti-water/soap when so many of your kids love it (Maddie eats it!!!) and swim so well?!?!? He's 17....he won't use deodorant, hence the daily 'must' of a morning shower. His hair is getting that greasy look.....It's only day two of the school year. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This morning, I just walked away for 5 minutes till he was ready to comply. He knows I am angry...which is a good sign...but still says no to the shower and hair washing, etc. Take care, Everyone. Matter of fact, just yesterday I was sitting here on the computer and she was behind me watching tv. I noticed her hanging over the sofa between it and the end table....hmmmmm, WHAT is she doing???? Here, she had hidden a bar of safeguard soap. She plopped back on the sofa and proceeded to munch. How funny that she knew to hide it, but not sneak eating it. Soon as I put my hand out, she handed it right over, with a giggle. So sly. Margaret, I don't have any suggestions on the shower thing. Might he prefer baths? Is it water hitting his body that bugs him? And I can't explain why he hates soap so much either. Gotta be VERY frustrating in these adolescent years, for sure. Let us know if you make any progress....HUGS, Donna
Guest guest
i thought of the aricept too, will see how it goes taking in the morning for a few days, he is talking way more on it, everyone seems to notice, and he even is being more socialable, but it may not be the aricept helping maybe its just being 14 and the aricept is screwing it up, hmmmm, he has a doc appt coming up and will definately bring this up with him. shawna
Guest guest
my guess is the water hitting his head thing, nathan takes showers often but does prefer baths, and just soaking, but still hates rinsing his head, etiher int he shower or bath, he does it, but we often have to encourage to rinse again s he isnt getting all the soap out, its just the no tears kind, but he has that soborea dermatitis on his scalp and the left over soap will make it itch and flake more. We use thses rx drops from the doc that do clear his head up right away. I dont know what to do aboutthe saop, nathan is a very sweaty boy and i am grateful he is fine wit useing soap, we are just sure to get the notear kind as he gets it everywhere. shawna

Guest guest
Jake hated to shower also but I think for him it was more the noise. He used to not like the bath noise so I would fill up before he came in. Now, he loves it all. Also, I gave him a little plastic pitcher to practice pouring. He would scoop up the water (hand of hand at first) and then pour it. I think this helped him get used to the sounds and the idea of water pouring out of the faucet and shower. Plus, playing in the water hose has helped also. Now, he likes to have the hose off, and then have someone gently squirt him in the mouth. Go figure. holly Re: a/Cindi/Florence/showers in the am my guess is the water hitting his head thing, nathan takes showers often but does prefer baths, and just soaking, but still hates rinsing his head, etiher int he shower or bath, he does it, but we often have to encourage to rinse again s he isnt getting all the soap out, its just the no tears kind, but he has that soborea dermatitis on his scalp and the left over soap will make it itch and flake more. Guest guest
Maybe Gareth had a bad experience with water some where, not at home. doesn't like really cold water to touch his hands and he cries if we turn on the shower. Could be just the water angle or maybe the water strength.Has Gareth always taken showers or are you trying to switch from baths to showers? all the sudden doe not like it when I lay him back on the car seat to change his pull up. Why? Who knows this is something we have always done. But now he cries and holds onto the seat. Can you adjust the shower head to a setting thats maybe not so concentrated? Guest guest
Jake now likes to have the bath water just high enough that he can lay down without getting it in his face. He lays down on his back in that typical DS position (arms out legs out) and just lays there. It is cute. He is a wild man in the pool though. He is very hard to hold. He just wants to go (as if he knows how to swim). I worry most that he will aspirate on the water ad it will get in his lungs. Don't want any more pneumonia's. Guest guest
nathan is like a fish at the pool too, spends most of it under the water, its rather funny, i need one of those orange flags to help keep track of him. he will all of a sudden come up get some more air and go back under dangling his strings in free motion under there. we almost got the american crawl mastered this summer but alas the pool closed b4 we could completely get it. , also likes to lay back in the tub, it is soo cute t watch him relax as an adult would, lol shawna
