Guest guest
I'm re-posting because no one responded (incredible but true!!) I was wondering what reading programs they used with Gareth or any other children with Ds and Autism who have successfully learned to read. My son is 8 and before the autism really set in (between 4 & 5) he knew all the letters of the alphabet and had a sight word vocabulary of over 30 words. Now he is completely non-verbal and does not attend to print at all. We tried several SSRIs with no improvements, then moved to risperdal and saw limited improvement with connection to others but no gains in any other areas. Now he's on Abilify and I see less than with risperdal. We're going to see Dr. Capone in next week but I am really discouraged. Guest guest
Hi Kim, My little Josh is doing pretty good with reading considering he is only 5, soon to be 6. He adores the Love and Learning videos and a little computer CD set from Southwestern Publishing. I also use a flash CD program with him and he's had everything phonics related from Vtech since he was born! LOL! I'm still trying to dig out from a move or I would elaborate on them again. I think I posted a more lengthy and enthusiastic message about one or all of the aforementioned on this list somewhere. We homeschool, and there is only so much Mom to go around, so I take advantage of everything technology has to offer to get to those 200 repetitions I was told he would need to learn something. Good luck! > I'm re-posting because no one responded (incredible but true!!) > > I was wondering what reading programs they used with Gareth or any other > children with Ds and Autism who have successfully learned to read. Guest guest
: loved the Love & Learning videos (and still does) but he does not read any of the words anymore. We also have tons of phonics toys and he has a bookcase full of books in his room but he has really lost interest in the past few years. I'll check out the other program you mentioned. Thanks, Kim
Guest guest
Kim, Wow, the fact that nder has lost interest in the Love and Learning videos is really scarey to me. I didn't think Josh would ever do that, but you have shown me it is possible. The only other thing I can think of is I have tried to keep things in rotation. We go off of Love and Learning and then try the flash series, then go to the one from Southwestern. I rotate flash cards, phonics tiles and writing things on a Magnadoodle, chalkboard and a super sized newsprint pad. His interest seems to wax and wane as it does for certain books, certain videos, certain danglies, certain foods, certain preferences . . . I hope you are able to revive his interest. Josh has just recently allowed me to read him a book again - it's been almost two years!!!!! Have hope!!! Let us know how things go. > : > > loved the Love & Learning videos (and still does) but he does > not read any of the words anymore. Guest guest
have you discussed aricept or something similair with him? has been on 5mg for 3weeks now and he is talking more than ever, its rather funny to listen to him, and over this last whole week his ESY teacher says he is doing an awesome job. Our docs goal is to slowly work nathan up to 15mg daily. We tried it last year but all nathan would do wile on just the 5mg was sleep constantly at school or car or at home, so we stopped and waited to try again before school started to see how he handles it. Im sure you probably allready know It is suppose to really help ds individuals with cognition and memory, and our doc has had great success with other pt's with ds on it. Meds affect all our children so differently, but for nathan he has been more socialable lately, very funny, even joking, but it may just be his age, just turning 14 recently, or it may be the aricept, or the combination of the two, Its really hard to figure out sometimes. shawna

Guest guest
If Love and Learning stops working for your kids, you can introduce them to another sight language video series: Your Baby Can Read.
