Hi Carol,

If your school district staff does not have the skills necessary to give Trisha

an education then ask for an out of district or private placement. Would your

advocate help you to write a state complaint? Would the behaviorist back up the

district's reluctance to teach Trisha with the state? If a sped attorney told

you to move after explaining your issue with the district, you spoke to a bad

sped attorney. Call another sped attorney and everyone else that may help you. I

think you have done all you could. Some districts are just plain ignorant and

have no regard for students with challenging disabilities. Trisha should never

have been placed with kindergarten students. I would have bit their heads off!

Well not exactly.

I'm having a rough week. The Texas company is leaving in the am, thankfully.

Zeb's PPT is Monday and is ever on my mind. I have two PPT's tomorrow. Caitlyn,

my daughter is being induced early friday am. I have the pleasure of caring for

Emersyn, the 2 yr. old terror granddaughter . My son asked me if he could move

back home with his girls this afternoon. Dh and I are still in shock. We had no

idea they had any problems and if that wasn't enough, my grandmother passed away

this evening. I have my business paperwork in a heap on my desk and my house is

a disaster. I will not be online for a few days. I was contemplating a nervous

breakdown but my schedule will not allow it. I am treating myself to a temporary

housekeeper and praying for a better week. See you next week.

Where is the appropriate reading program that meets Trisha's needs?

They don't have one. I have asked over and over and so far nothing has been

provided. As far as goals go, one of our biggest problems is that they

don't do very much with Trisha maybe 3-4 goals and they don't move on when she

masters any, just keep on doing the same thing over and over. There are 90

words on the Dolch pre-primary list, the teacher herself suggested this goal.

Finger spell is using manual signs to spell words. Over the weekend I have

already taught Trisha to recognize 3 words by me finger spelling them to her

and she also recognizes them in print. She seems to do better when we use the

manual alphabet it is a good visual prompt. Yes goals 3 and 4 are the same

but with different outcomes so that they can move on without having to call

another IEP meeting, that seems to be an issue for them. Turning in homework is

just is part of following directions. The problem is for most of her school

years there has been very little expectations put on Trisha and I fully

believe she is more capable than they are given her the chance to be. Trisha

cannot read at all other than sight words she needs to start with the basics

since they have never been provided, I make homemade books for her but to be

honest Trisha doesn't have interests that most 13 year olds would have. I don't

know how to explain this, but right now Trisha's interests are limited to

eating, and watching Disney movies. Believe me, I have tried to get her

interested in things other kids are into but that isn't Trisha. No Trisha is not

in

a general classroom she has been in self-contained ever since she started

school. I have pushed for there to be more included and up until this year

they have let her participate with the pre-school and kindergarten classes. I

kept pushing for her to be with more age appropriate peers so they finally let

her go sometimes to the 5th grade lunch block, and 5th grade music and art.

The sad part is that because of all the years being sent with pre-K and K

she is like a fish out of water. Here you have a 155 lb. 13 year old child

that has not been taught to read or write who is in a self-contained classroom

with student all younger than herself with furniture that is the size for

pre-k and where she is still treated like a toddler. Not all of her delays are

from her disabilities some are from the fact that the school has not over the

last 8-10 years provided a proper education. I am writing the goals

because I am getting tired of them doing the same things year after year with no

functional progress being made. I don't' think I am doing any worse than what

they have done for the last 8-10 years and at least I am giving Trisha some

expectations and if we need to go back and reduce the amount of the goals then

that is fine but it's still better than not giving her enough of a challenge

as has been happening so far. If only a couple of things are done a year

then the progress rate will always be behind.

Discuss how to work with Trisha, what works and what doesn't, her sensory

and health issues etc.

We have discussed over and over how to work with Trisha, In fact they get

very bored and tell us we've heard all that before. I do have an advocate and

we have a behavioral consultant who is working with us and both of them said

that I'm not going to get anywhere with this school system because they

believe part of the problem is that the schools system do not know how to work

with Trisha and resent us coming in and trying to show them.

We have not received her communication device as of yet, we are still

waiting to see if medicaid will provide it. We have had an AT eval, speech eval,

and will be going in July for more eval's for Trisha, all the reports are sent

to the school and the school even attended the eval's for speech and AT. It

still didn't help.

There is no question that Trisha needs a good speech and sign language

program but what we have is me teaching them to teach her.

I do not take your post as an insult, I appreciate your input and I do

understand where you are coming from. Please understand that I have tried

everything I can think of even calling an attorney for advice and she

recommended

moving. I am not in a position financially to move at this time so I need to

find a way to get the school system to do what is needed for Trisha.

I am so sorry about your grandmother passing away as well as all the other

things that are going on in your life. I understand about not having time to

schedule a nervous break down and my prayers are with you and your family

that you all get through these trying times with your sanity intact. Please do

take some time just for yourself and know our prayers are with you.

Charlyne,

I'm sorry for the loss of your Grandmother. It sounds as if your plate is

rather full and quite suddenly. Hang in there and take it one step at a time.

Good for you for knowing to hire the housekeeper, that's the last thing you need

to be worrying about and it will feel good to step into a pine sol fresh house

at the end of the day.

Thinking of you and sending hugs,
