Margaret: I cared for a few kids with ASD (before Tori was diagnosed) in a

day care I worked at, and it became too familiar when I would go home and

Tori would be doing alot of the things those kids were doing. Eventually, I

started calling her by their names because it was like looking into a mirror

at work. After mulling it over in my head and talking with the families of

those kids with ASD, I thought to myself...something is definitely not right

here. She acts more Autistic every day. We had a get together with our

local support group families, and it finally kicked in that Tori was not

socializing with the other kids...she was sitting either with me or in the

house with dad. It's then I said she is not your typical kid with DS.

I think the doctors don't know any more than we do unless they specialize in

Autism. We, as parents, unfortunately, have to teach them a thing or 2 as

well. I think that if you, as a mom, feels is pretty well informed about

DS, feel there is something else going on with your child, different from

what you've seen or read about on DS,-then you go for it. If your doctor(s)

are willing to go further..great! If not-Push open every door, drain every

brain, scream as loud as you can, to have your child evaluated and get them

the services they deserve. The problem is that so many of our kids go

undiagnosed with anything other than the DS that it inhibits them from

getting those extra services kids with DS don't usually " qualify " for. Not

that I want another label...but, hey if it gets them what they need...then

GO FOR IT!

I am sooo passionate about this dual diagnosis thing, because I see a few in

my group that are not diagnosed. Our local group is going to try to put

info out to our members about the dual diagnosis via our newsletter to make

them aware that there could be an underlying reason for their child's odd

behaviors..and it could be Autism. If all local support groups (at least

until we can get the medical professionals involved) could alert families

that this is a possibility, maybe we could help more kids. I know I am a

dreamer, but hey...someone has to be! =)

Sorry for ranting. I guess I am on a pedestal today. Tori is in camp and I

have too much time to think. Did I say " think " ? Oh, my...anyway..I love

you all and wish we could get the word to all the other families who are

going through what we went through beforehand.

No he has not. I thought the school psychologist would perform some sort of eval

on Freddie. When I left her office I immediately made a call to my pediatrician.

He submitted the referral through USCF Children's Hospital. In the mean time I

read, read, read. It's a long story about getting referrals but I am sure you

all know about that. We are military so times your referral troubles by 20 and

you have our problems with the medical system.

nna

nna: Has your little one had a psychological evaluation by a licensed

Pediatric Psychologist?

They are the ones trained in diagnosing dd.

Hey, maybe some of you other military moms can help her. The child needs to

get a psych eval..and not one from a school psych for a dual diagnosis .
