Guest guest
Hi Dawn, I probably joined this list about the time you went off. We have a daughter who is 8 and totally nonverbal and I have been toying with the idea of homeschooling next year. I did homeschool my other kids for 6 years so the idea isn't new to me, but the idea of homeschooling a severely disabled child is. What do you do? Any special materials you're using? Do you get a break? Do you have other children? I did keep Hannah home this last fall/winter to work on potty training. We're still not totally there, but much further down the road than we were. Welcome back. a (Drew 14 Tourette syndrome, OCD/ADHD; Marissa10, Hannah 8 DS/Aut)
Guest guest
Hi a, thanks,it is good to be back. With , we mostly do sensory stuff, have lycra swing in the house and he justs craves that deep pressure, He also uses pictures and we try to get him to show us what he needs by more and taking our hands. He has an augmentive device. he becomes very agitated and sometimes cannot focus for very long. I think being around so much stimulation is not good right now. He was begining to become aggressive then and now I think they would have put him in the behavior mod class and I heard stories about it that were not what I wanted for him. I would rather help him at home and work on helping him to become more comfortable in his own skin, whatever that takes. So I just take those focused moments when they come!! Reading books is big for us, and singing! I guess good or bad I tend to follow his needs and then pray I can be gentle with him and he will feel as if he is being helped without being pushed so hard into doing things. (We had problems at school) Would love to hear about Hannah, they are the same age and it is so comforting to know when someone else is where you are. I bet she is precious, I am sure you will make the right decision about school! Take care, you have the best folks here!!
