Guest guest
Hi: So, I'm torn between letting Liam flap, since he seems to need it (he doesn't do it at school, just at home) and trying to get him to stop. While we're figuring this out, does anyone have any suggestions as to what stuff he might flap that would be appropriate? Right now he flaps plastic bags (he is like an engineer because the weight and what we call " the flappability " has to be just right) or toilet paper which he precisely rolls up to have a little handle, or sometimes even my knee- hi stockings, which is quite embarassing. Any on-line sources for flappy things? Thank you all so much for all your help! I feel like I " ve learned so much in the last week from you all! Guest guest
well nathan dangles strings and danly toys, like monkeys and woody dolls, the strings are handy as he can put them in his pocket when needs to and i can readily get them about anywear, it can be almost any type of stringy material, lace or ribbon , my stethascopes, lol, the ties on our robes, and daddy's ties, thankfully he hasnt worn them in years, but in public he usually keeps a few of his basic shoe strings in his pocket should the need arrive.--- oh oh great news everyone, the other day, nathan button his pollo shirt all by HIMSELF ,lol he has a thing for these type of shirts and only has a couple cause he is always unbottoning and eating the buttons etc, but he kept on asking everyone to keep rebuttoning the two or three buttons these shirts have, well i said no finally, said you will just unbutton them again so you will have to do it yourself, he said " i cant " nd " help " several times but i said no it just like your jeans just push it throug the hole, and a few moments later he was all proud and chest puffed out, buttoned his " fancy " shirt all by himself. boys, sheesh, geuss what he is going to get for his birthday this august, lol shawna
Guest guest
... Tori is a flapper too. We ask her to rub her hands when she flaps. She gets sensory input from the rubbing but is not whacking anyone. Liz Mom to Tori 5 y.o. Guest guest
when nathan starts flapping his hands, usually when he is over stimulated or happy, we remind him to put in his pockets or to put under his legs while he is sitting. shawna
Guest guest
I flap my hands occasionally. In my case, it's either excitement (especially the excitement I get after spending time with other autistic people) or overwhelmsion. I personally think that if someone takes precautions not to hit anyone while flapping, there is nothing wrong with doing it. If something less obviously strange serves the same purpose and the kid is being treated badly because of acting strange, then you might want to suggest he try it instead, but while remembering that the problem lies with those who are treating him badly rather than him. On another topic, often kids will " hold stuff in " at school and then relax at home where they are more free to be themselves. I act much more autistic if I'm alone. I've heard parents of kids with other differences describe similar things, like a touretter ticcing more at home than at school or a gifted 6 year old pretending to struggle with reading at school, despite easily reading novels at home. I can think of a myriad of flappable things - little flags, ribbon (shiny ribbon is great if he likes shiny things), little strips of cloth, etc. Also, the flapping plastic bags make me wonder if he'll like shaking a maraca - it makes a similar sound (personally I find it overwhelming, but apparently he doesn't).
