From the NY Post:October 15, 2008 -- Denis Leary should brace himself for hate mail from the parents of kids diagnosed with autism. In his new book, "Why We Suck: A Feel-Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid," the joke-slinging "Rescue Me" star writes about the brain disorder: "There is a huge boom in autism right now because inattentive mothers and competitive dads want an explanation for why their dumb-ass kids can't compete academically, so they throw money into the happy laps of shrinks . . . to get back diagnoses that help explain away the deficiencies of their junior morons. I don't give a [bleep] what these crackerjack whack jobs tell you - yer kid is NOT autistic. He's just stupid. Or lazy. Or both." The Autism Society of America responded: "For

Mr. Leary to suggest that families or doctors conspire to falsely diagnose autism is ridiculous . . . [His] remarks reflect the same misconceptions of autism being caused by bad or unemotional parenting that were held over 50 years ago." http://www.nypost. com/seven/ 10152008/ gossip/pagesix/ learys_brain_ vs__the_autistics_ 133648.htm

I JUST CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE! Why is it ok to ridicule OUR kids and

their REAl DISORDERS? Would they get away with making fun of

Cerebral Palsey children or Down Syndrome kids? Why ours? I have a 9

year old daughter with moderate to severe autism, non-verbal and

sensory impairment. Hardly a case of us wanting a high acheiving

scholar or star athelete but we just can't handle not having that so

we made up a disorder to rationalize it away. I need a few shots of

Jack s and a Valium right now and sleep this one off. Thanks

Mr. Leary, you will be the straw that turns me into and alcoholic

drug addict!

Autism Speaks' Statement on Denis Leary's Comments

We are deeply disappointed that television personality Denis Leary

would misuse his celebrity, compromise his reputation, and exploit the

real challenges of individuals with autism in making his recent

extremely disrespectful and hurtful comments. His words reflect a

complete ignorance of and lack of sensitivity to the true plight of

families facing autism. Autism is not a joke. It is very real,

especially to the families and caregivers whose lives are forever

changed when their loved one receives an autism diagnosis. Autism is

recognized globally as an urgent healthcare crisis. Unfortunately, in a

country built on the tenets of freedom of speech, sometimes people with

access to the media are able to spread harmful mistruths. We would

encourage Mr. Leary to spend one day with the more than one million

families affected by autism in the U.S. We believe he would quickly

recognize the challenges these families face and, hopefully, develop

compassion and understanding for this very real condition.

Was this different than their comment on Savage?
