Hi Marina,

You answered your own question as far as the homeschooling is concerned. Luca

will not be able to socialize. The teachers should be qualified. Have you

ever asked what their qualifications are? Have you spoken to the district about

your concerns? Have you considered a private placement in a better school that

would meet Luca's needs? The attorney may be able to help in a private

placement moreso in homeschooling. You didn't mention where and what his school

program was.

Hi again,

Can someone tell me what is involved in homeschooling? Will they send OT,

PT, speech therapists to work with your child? What else , I live in New

York.

Thanks in advance,

Hi Viola,

The first thing you will want to do is check what your state

requires. After that, there are plenty of resources available for

homeschool and for homeschooling special needs children. All of

Josh's therapy takes place in our home, but once the intensive (35

hour a week) autism therapy is over I will likely choose one therapy

to do outside the home, just for something different. You may find

you will have to obtain therapy services privately if you want

privacy, but if you have good insurance it is a non-issue.

I know that lots of folks on this list might disagree with me, but

all of Josh's therapist's think he is doing so well because he is

homeschooled. That may or may not be, but one thing is for sure -

you can't ask for a more inclusive atmosphere! LOL! He has his

little hands in everything they do and he goes with his big brothers

to their homeschool functions and has his Creative Movement class to

get out and about. You can make 's environment as rich as you

want.

Let me know if you need anything else. Good luck! :)

Hi all,

I think each district decides the homeschooling rules, in NY anyway. Our

district would not provide therapy for Seth unless I took him to school for it.

Our district does no co-teaching either. We have to provide quarterly

reports, year end progress reports and testing every other year. We have no

use

of equipment or buildings, but the next district over from us is much more

lenient with all of that.

Gail :-)

Hi Donna!

We're all doing well, thanks for asking. :-) I ended up having to buy a

new computer. I couldn't stand not reading the posts any longer. LOL I'm

off to Char's tomorrow for a few days. is doing okay. Slowing down a

lot, but aren't we all. LOL Seth is doing GREAT! His teacher is a pain in

the rear, but he'll get what he needs, one way or another. You haven't been

very active on the list either. Things busy at home or is everything going

so well you don't need us. LOL

Gail :-)

I'm homeschooled. I don't know about specifics for New York - I

suggest you could try googling it. In my case, I'm a pretty

independant learner so all school was doing was cutting into my

learning time. If you can't get therapies maybe see about learning how

to do them yourself?

You might like to look at the website

http://home.earthlink.net/~tammyglaser798/authome.html Aut-2B-Home,

it's about homeschooling autistic kids.

Hi Gail,

I would really check and make sure about those NY homeschool laws. I

think homeschool laws are state laws just like the Office of Public Instruction.

Now just like some school districts are better than others, some may be more

homeschool-friendly than others, but they are still required to follow the state

homeschool law. Maybe I'm wrong, but definitely worth checking out.

Hey, thanks for passing on the info regarding the Oprah show today. My son

and I watched it and it was interesting to see his reaction - like wow, I'm not

the only one. I know exactly what they're going through. I guess there's and

HBO special on Tourette's Nov 12 (Sat.). Now I just gotta find someone who gets

it and will record it.

Hi a,

You may be right about required laws, but there is a big difference district

to district and state to state. So many state laws tell you that much is

left up to each individual district. I know PA is much easier than NY, and our

two side by side districts are like night and day. Heck, probably like

idea, some follow the basics and some are more liberal.

Gail :-)

Hi Gail,

I bet you could find NY's homeschool law online. We have a pretty good

law here in Wa. State. But if you are requesting services as a homeschooler and

you have a copy of the law, they may be more willing. If you could find a

website for the Office of Public Instruction, I bet they may have it there.

Well, I think I'm going to be reading a lot of the sleeping pattern stuff

today as Hannah's pattern in definitely changing - not in a good way.
