Hi a, I have been battling my district for years to teach Zeb how to really read. The attitutes in the schools regarding reading to children with ds or those students that do not conform to their standard programs are considered a waste of time. The district finally paid for a very expensive reading eval with a reading therapist at the other end of our state. We have found a reading program that meets Zeb's learning style. The progress is slow but Zeb can decode words. The district said it wasn't possible, huh. He may never be a good reader but he will learn how to read. Don't give up. We have so much new technoglogy today anything is possible. Charlyne Mom to Zeb 12 DS/OCD/ASD?
Guest guest
iowa city did an extensive eval in al areas includeing reading and the school spent over 1000 dolloars on a edmark computer reading program for him, as one of the programs UIHC suggested, its slow going and he has proved he can read some, a tiny bit anyways, but the programs go at his pace and now he is in the kindergarten area of the program the lessons take longer so the teachr has to split them up for him if he is inattentive that day, and he keeps requiring great amounts of review, he keeps forgetting words and then has to go back and review them again. we were hoping that the aricept would help in this area, but he became soo moody, and the only channge was the aricept so we decided to take him off until summer vacation and them possibly try again, also he was sooooo tired on that med, kept falling asleep at school and everywhere, i think this is what added to his mooodines, as he still gets whiney even off the med but the doc said to try 600mg of ibuprofen bid , that he may be in pain with the cold weather etc, and the other day he was sooooo bad, we had had it, so i gave him the 600mg with a glass of milk, and sent him to bed and awhile later, he came out and no further whiney or crying not even when it was time to go to bed. so maybe he is hurting, i know many of the elderly care for are hurting horribly, the winters are very cold here and its been really bad over last few weeks, did have a day up int he 60's dont know where t hat came from, lol, gottat love iowa's weather, lol, expecting 6-12inches of snow tomarrow night they say. shawna
