Elie has been urine trained since age 6 unless he is very ill ( when he had pneumonia, he wet himself once and was VERY upset) Elie ONLYP sits for toileting. We decided that for hom this was the safer route- floor urinals when he was 5 left him peeing on his shoes! aAlso, commodes in public b/r give a modicum of privacy and a little more safety. Plus, I end up with cleaner b/r. Elie's toileting accidents are ONLY b/m . We believe it is because he doesn't interpret the signals of gas vice need to toilet correctly during the day. As I said earler, he toilets without werror at nite! Understand, he is 19 - at 14,15, he was stll having toileting accidents at least 2-3 time a month. I was told by his " special teacher " that I should really start concentrating on toilet training him since next term we are sending him to kindergarten. The teacher said that the school may not keep someone staffed that will be able to change his diaper if there is an accident, and this may cause him to miss being enrolled in school. I informed her that state law demands someone to be available for that. She said that is correct but not all school districts put that in their budget to staff someone and there-in would lie our problem. I told her then the school district would just HAVE to hire someone, to which she told me to get ready for another fight. She made me feel like I wasn't trying hard enough and that it shouldn't be that big of a deal to get this potty training done. And also that I was expecting too much from the school district. I wasn't sure what age our kids were trained enough with minimal accidents. Now I don't feel so bad! Thanks toileting Let me be more specific. He's always had a bladder of steel and stays dry during the night. His issue is that he doesn't tell us when he has to go, it's us saying " come on , let's go potty " . Pooping is a whole other story. It's up to whoever is around him to catch the signs and book it to the toilet. Last week I was constantly doing loads of laundry with 2 things in them, pants and undies!!! And I wonder why I can't catch up on the rest of the laundry. started at a new school November 1st, he's in Kindergarten - he's gone poop in his pants twice there and had a couple of urine accidents - mostly because I think they forget that he's not going to tell them he has to go. The first poop accident, the teacher let me know in our conversation that it had been awhile since she'd had to clean that up. I felt bad but then I moved on - whatcha gonna do. At his old school, he pooped and peed on the first day of school and they were more than quick to tell me about it. HELLO? IT'S CALLED SPECIAL EDUCATION - SOME THINGS ARE GOING TO BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN THE REG ED TRACK! Good for you for speaking up about the law. I remember reading a post on the upsndowns list when was a baby about someone having to go up to school to clean up their child after an accident - that's crazy. If it wasn't for 's preschool sped teacher giving me the extra bit of confidence that he was really okay to ride in undies to school, I'd still be sending him in pull ups! I was so afraid he'd have an accident on the bus - I guess I didn't have as much faith in him that he was ready but he was! It will come, don't worry. Steps to Inddependance by Baker and Brightman from s Pub,. When Elie started school, I sent a duffle bag with 6 sets of clothes. NO DIAPERS. He wore a diaper on the bus under his underoos which was removed when he was toileted on arrival. He was on a 45 min.. toileting program for YEARS. I supplied wipes. Gloves and a place and person to change him was the school district problem. He had an aide always thru middle school *(regular school) Now in the APS he attends there is still an aide, but he can mostly change himself on the rare times he soils. He carries a change of clothes in his backpack. Make sure your IEP reflects the health need of toileting. I was hoping the same would be true for Gavin. When I put regular under pants on him instead of his pull ups, he can sit in urinated pants and never complain. I was hoping the wetness would help in the toilet training. When he has the pull ups on he will come to me and say " Uh-oh pee pee panties " . He knows when he goes which is a plus... I hope I can find the solution for him not to be " afraid " to sit on the toilet and to not be " afraid " to empty his bladder completely without the crying, kicking, and dropping to the floor! I know it will happen someday... I'll read the book and see if I can get any pointers from it!
