Stupid retard and other lovely language

Hi Sara,

Good suggestion but it's been done already. Yearly, a social worker from

another school comes into Zeb's class and talks about differences etc. When the

kids were asked what was different about their class they responded that they

had an aide in the classroom, not a word about Zeb. The kids are so used to him

it's not a big deal anymore. It's the parents with attitudes that spread that

attitude to their children. I have to follow a specific agenda for my speech

tomorrow. The social relation part will not be pretty. I will build on that

topic and what terrible things that happen when good supports are not put into

place.

Fortunately for Elie, he does not understand that language can be unkind.

But for Zeb, you have another issue.

With an understanding teacher, woud it be possible to do a short

presentation to the class - with or without Zeb- to help these growing minds

understand that all of us have differences?? Some are as subtle as a

freckle or hair color. Some are a need for glasses or asthma medication.

Some more noticeable like a difficulty in speaking certain words. Some are

better at basketball than others, etc

I did this type of class for years without Elie. IT seems to help

youngsters look aat people with different eyes and more seeing hearts.

After all, we all are different in some ways but alike in more ways. I bet

you could do a bang up job.

Hi Donna,

Thanks for asking. I did just fine. I was actually a nervous wreck. The

school district was in attendance in full force, administration, sped teachers

and

related services. I asked the pupil service coordinator from my district if she

had reserved all these seats and that I had no idea the school staff enjoyed

listening to me speak,LOL. They gave me the thumbs up. She did say that she

encouraged her entourage from my district to support me even though many had no

idea who I was or I they. I was asked a few very difficult questions that I

had to answer honestly but managed to do it respectfully. Zeb's attorney was

also in attendance taking notes. She felt I answered the questions very well. I

am relieved this is over. The dept of ed wants me to do this again with Zeb! I

am really nervous now, my kid with the mouth,LOL.
