Hi Carollynn,

My daughter Sophie, who is 5, has been recently diagnosed with

autism. Before I asked for an assessment I had done lots of reading

because I just wasn't sure. With some children it is really clear to

their families that they have autism, but in Sophie's case it was not

that clear cut.

The Riverbend DS Parent Support Group website has some great articles

on autism. I found the one called " Diagnosis of Autism in children

with DS "

http://www.altonweb.com/cs/downsyndrome/index.htm?page=autism.html

helpful in working out if her behaviours might be due to autism or

not. But I guess having an assessment done is the only sure way of

knowing.

Hi Carollyn,

My name is Vi, I have 3 children Tammy 20, Tania 17, and 12 DS and

PDD(ons).

, does alot of hand flapping, you really have to force the eye contact

ie put his chin up and say kyle look at me!! He does many repititive

behaviors, and does get stuck with certain toys, perfers to play alone.

however,

kyle does talk!!

I would have your son evaluated, because he can get alot of help with the

additional diagnosis.

good luck!!

Lisette, (love that name, by the way!)

Thanks. I think I need to get an eval. I've mentioned it to his therapists but

to no avail. They just say his DS is severe.

Thanks again,

Carollynn
