Guest guest
H i Diane, I have Hannah who is 7 and has Down syndrome and Autism. She has a 50% chance of having Tourette's syndrome as I also have son (13) who does have Tourette's syndrome and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and we're now looking at ADD. Because it was found to run in my husband's family each of our kids would have a 50% chance of having Tourette's. The girls would have a 30-40% chance of being carriers of Tourette's but not have any symptoms. I know it seems overwhelming when you get that many diagnoses. When I asked my husband what we would do if Hannah ended up having Tourette's too, he just kind of laughed like well, what's one more thing. He is much easier going than I am. Welcome to the group. I'm sure you will find wisdom and help here for your son. Blessings, a (Drew 13, Tourette's syndrome, OCD, ADD?, Marissa 9, Hannah 7 DS/Aut)
Guest guest
Welcome Diane and ! I think you will find many of us have more than one diagnosis for our children. My 10 year old son has three - so far!! He was born with DS, diagnosed with a speech impairment called Developmental Apraxia of Speech (DAS) at around 6 and most recently, we found out he falls in the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). A person is autistic or a person has autism, they are one and the same - just some grammatical maneuvering! My mother is French Canadian, I have explained many nuances to her over the years - I loved reading your post as a result! Where are you from? How old is your son? Do you have other children? I hope you enjoy our group, there is a wealth of knowledge here! It sounds like is quite a fighter, it must have been a scary beginning for you. Has anyone pointed out the " Disability Solutions Newsletter " to you yet? (www.disabilitysolutions.org). Our moderator for this group, Joan Guthrie Medlen, is the editor of that newsletter as well. Under " Newsletters " , if you look at " Volume 3, issues 5 & 6 " you will find her amazing articles on " DS and the Autistic Spectrum Disorder " . This is the article I came across that convinced me that our son had the dual dx! It is also thanks to her that we have this group! This amazing lady has also recently written a book on nutrition for our kids with DS, " The Down Syndrome Nutrition Handbook " . There is also a lot of information available on " Autism " itself. Make sure it is recent as some of the older books have outdated information. If you search for it on the internet, it will give you more than you can read! There are many good books out recently too. Good luck, we'll look forward to your posts, Joanne mom to (13), (10), ds,asd, das & (7) Newbie to the group.... Hi all I was amaze to find that this group existed.......but i have few question .....i don't know what u mean by autistic spectrum disorder and also does anyone of you.....have triple diagnoses......for your child.... We were told last november (2003) that my son was autistic and also has Tourette Syndrome.... born with down syndrome march 23 1993....had open heart surgery at 7 months..complete AV canal repair.....but at 5 months they did PA banding and PDA closing.....was hospitalize for almost the whole 8 months minus 2 weeks before open heart surgery......he was a very sick little boy the first year...we almost lost him at 2 mths of pneumonia and to S.T.A.F.F. infection.....at 5 months...the doctors had give him 24 hrs to live.....after 3 days the little fighter got out of it.....and he's full of energy....more than mom at times...;-))) What is the different saying autistic and autism....btw i'm french soo maybe drop a few french spelling word....:-))...'s Pediatrician went on maternity leave....after she told me.......so i didn't have to much time to asked questions and was still in shock of him having Tourette Syndrome...it was more noticable when he hit puberty....the end of last summer his tics came out.....so i finally asked and said i suspected (autistic) that wasn't just caring the title DS....Peds did evaluation and told me the result.... I had seen kids with autism or autistic.....and had tics so i never taught of tourette syndrome.......so far it's both mild to moderate..... communicate by talking with me..but not long conversation....man of a few words....
