Guest guest
They just started teaching Trisha sight words this past year after I showed them what she learned at home. In fact we have already had one IEP meeting this year and another one scheduled to work on her reading goals, and communication goals among other things. The good part about the IEP meeting is that her pediatrician was at the last meeting via phone and plans to be at the next meeting as well either in person or via phone. He has a son with Down Syndrome so he fully understands what we are going through. Carol She isn't Typical, She's Trisha!
Guest guest
Is my child the only one not reading yet? I am amazed that there are so many of the kids on the list reading. I would be happy if Rochelle would just initiate some communication. Rochelle uses pictures to communicate but I don't call it reading. I don't think she recognizes letters either. For those of you that have kids reading. Wow! Does anyone have a child that reads but does not talk? Just thought I'd bring it up. Guest guest
Diane, Maddie does not read. And she hasn't really figured out the PECS to make it work efficiently for her. HOWEVER, she can figure things out that simply stun us. For instance, Saturday, she managed to figure out how to open the front door.....it requires two steps...turning two locks. When she did it, Duff said to me, " Yea right, she's profoundly retarded " ....;-) Donna
Guest guest
well nathan is 13 and doesnt really read, yet, except what is functional for him, lol, he can read any of the lables on his videos and know what they are, the same for his games or cd's, but forget a book as of yet, he likes books and loves to be read to, and we are working on having him read his versus out loud for church youth group (awanis) since he doesnt seem able to memorize them as his peers, then he gets to pass to next level and gets points for even trying, they are very understanding at church for the most part anyways. I just metion edmark to say that edmark has shown the most progress for nathan, he has met many goals with this, and being on the computer which most of his curriculum is, it adjusts to his level and is fun for him and they print off little books from it and everything. shawna not reading yet > > Is my child the only one not reading yet? Guest guest
I think your little Maddie just needs the right motivation. LOLO Don' we all. We use the pictures as an exchange for communication. Rochelle has to be motivated to use the picture. We are just now starting to use a sequence of pictures for hand washing. I have no idea what she is thinking except maybe how she can escape before I grab her to wash her hands. The PECS help Rochelle to make choices. When I talk to Rochelle I swear she doesn't understand me half the time. She does what she thinks I want out of habit not understanding. Well, did I go off topic here. Sorry to blather. Maddie's motor planning just amazes me! I know that is a challenge for you. Diane > Diane, > Maddie does not read. And she hasn't really figured out the PECS to make it work efficiently for her. Guest guest
Diane, You're right. She motor-plans so amazingly well. When she wants something, she can easily figure it out. Even things that are two and three step processes. It's incredible. YEt words have no meaning whatsoever. She does know her name, but not much else. Autism is a bizaar condition.
