Guest guest
nathanuse to do this constantly when he eas little, nowadays he just does it to annoy his little brother, lol, boys will be boys, lol and siblings siblings, lol. He outgrew it as he did with other behaviors and brought in new ones. remember this is how littleones explore etc, but i would try to redirect to things that are ok to lick. shawna
Guest guest
i agree they can undestand whats yucky or gross, and whats ok, and we just would tell nathan eww that is gross, or yucky, try this instead, and gave him refrigerated baby teethers or that vibrating chewy or his chewy tube, etc. shawna
Guest guest
i know what is it with the pets dishes? that took us the longest to break nathan of, every day, uuugh, but he did stop thankfully. Oh that rememinds me, i remember nathan use to chew up his shirts, the front of them horribly they use to look like we had rats or something. OH i also found a new chewy/dangly toy or nathan found it, and it works great, the tubing from my stethoscope, he chews on it,a nd never breaks off, and it dangles like his strings and i just toss them into the dishwasher now and then to get a good sterilization. shawna
Guest guest
I was wondering is licking typical in ds?Mic licks all the windows and laps water out of the dog water bowl if Im not watching. I actually thought he got the licking habit from our pets maybe not,he licks his arms and will lick his shoes too.He also chews anything he can.My cell phone case has become his chewey toy he wont use the Ps and Qs I bought for him we have almost stopped the dangling the rubberband just kinda fazied it out but now its something else to replace it. Now he dangles his socks and chews on them or my bathrobe belt.I loved those rubberbands but now he can bite a piece off them so we stopped using them.I d use one sometimes as a reinforcer and Im sitting with him.Do you think the licking is a sensory issue? Im glad someone brought up licking I just thought Mic learned it from the pets. Funny he licks non food objects and not food.Although will take a few baby spoons of pudding and he took 3 little bites of a hersey bar yesterday and chewed it and swallowed it some came back out.He will attempt to brush his teeth too if we make a big deal out of it.After he finishes the little tasks he claps for himself and expects everyone else to clap for him too.He thinks hes hot stuff I am happy to say, very cute, for right now anyway. Thanks Laurie
Guest guest
<<I was wondering is licking typical in ds?Mic licks all the windows and laps water out of the dog water bowl if Im not watching>> LOL I KNOW would be doing this too if we had pets. I know alot of DS kids who do it and alot of autistic kids too. From what I gather there is more of a sense of feeling in the tongue for them than anywhere else...they get more input than from their fingers like we do. There are alot of oral motor exercises and desensitizing therapy that can be done for it. Then there's the chewing thing too...alot of kids chew on everything and seem to do well with theratubing or clear plastic tubing necklaces that they have constant access to; unfortunately this never worked for . It used to be a leather key chain holder, then many other inanimate objects, now it is her own tongue she chews on. She has never moved off of pureed food tho because of GI problems. I've always assumed the chewing thing would abate after they were chewing food well but what do I know? Sherry
Guest guest
<<Once we caught her licking car tires...I told her, " Maddie, we draw the line at licking road kill " ....;-) Donna>> LOL you know how many moms of " normal " kids would find this very UNfunny. Haven't they helped us to develop our dark side in the sense of humor department? hehe Sherry
Guest guest
Add to the list of licking but at least this has decreased to only licking the plate. One of his docs had mentioned that it could be due to lack of Zinc. I still did not find out if this was the culprit as I had him under supplements. Yep, our life is never boring. Guest guest
Hi all, I can't believe I never read anyone post about licking. Zeb licks too. I just chalked it up to one of those weird things he does. He doesn't do it as often as he did but I still catch him licking his hands or the windows. I learn something new everyday.
