Guest guest Posted June 19, 2004 Report Share Posted June 19, 2004 -- My 9 year old son, Nicolas, started Zoloft around Christmastime. He was getting to the point where he had his hands over his ears almost constantly at school and in crowds, and quite often at home with just the 4 of us. Our pediatrician prescribed Zoloft since it comes in liquid form and Nicolas is notorious for not taking medicine well. We dissolve it in 7-up so it's a treat for him. Anyway, the hands came off the ears almost instantly -- now it's a rare occurence to see it. Also, he's much more socially comfortable. He doesn't hide at parties anymore and he's as social as he was before we noticed the autism in him (age 4 or 5). The most amazing example I can give you was a party we went to in February. It was a birthday party for a 3-year old -- lot's of kids, noise and general mayhem. Nicolas was like a completely changed kid, playing in the room with the kids, engaging with the adults, even happily enjoying the Happy Birthday song. My husband and I were completely beside ourselves. We were practically jumping up and down and telling anyone who would listen " but this is amazing! We've never seen this before! " Anyway, it's the only medication we've put him on, so I can't give you any comparison info, but it's been great for us... Guest guest Posted June 20, 2004 Report Share Posted June 20, 2004 My son was in the process of being diagnosed at age 11 when he first took Zoloft. He has a bit of everything. Some autistic characteristics, some OCD, sensory problems....so the doctor didn't quite know what would work. She told me from the beginning that it was going to be hit or miss. I was concerned about bipolar since three other close blood relatives are BP. Anyways, she prescribed Zoloft and within a week he was totally off the wall. At one point at school he had a tantrum and ripped all his clothes off and threw them at his teachers and sat naked in the corner of his classroom (they got the other kids out of there) for at least an hour before someone could convince him to get dressed again. The doctor said that was the first true indication of BP because someone who is Bipolar will have that reaction when taking Zoloft. was then put on Depakote which worked great but he gained weight. We changed it to topamax and that kept him level. In addition, he's been taking Wellbutrin. When he started it, we noticed that he would actually sit at one activity for an extended period of time instead of jumping from one thing to another all the time. His attention span got much better and he continues to take the Wellbutrin. His doctor and I decided to take him off the topamax and see how he does. Its been a few weeks and so far, so good. This summer will be the true test. The move to Texas will be stressful. If he survives without major behavioral issues, I'll be overjoyed. If he starts to stress badly, I'll get him to the doctor asap. He's 16 now and has grown up quite a bit. The older he gets, the better things are. Thats my experience with Zoloft. Guest guest Posted June 22, 2004 Report Share Posted June 22, 2004 well soloft didnt do anything for nathan, but when he was on luvox, he did great even started his speech up, and even though he isno longer on the luvox after 3yrs of it, he still talks. shawna.
