Any time you inhale anything into your lungs (even water) it can cause an infection, which is exactly what causes bronch. in the first place. So, yes, aspirating CAN worsen your bronch.

My daughter (Fionn) is the one who had the reflux surgery two weeks ago to prevent these aspirations. This is absolutely amazing to me, but she was having DAILY asthma and bronch. symptoms prior to the surgery. Wheezing, mucous she had to work hard to bring up, etc. Since the surgery she has only wheezed once! And it went away with one Xopenex treatment (prior to the surgery, we couldn't always stop the wheeze with 2 Xopenex treatments, Acapella and chest PT). We haven't even been that great about doing her minimum twice daily Xopenex (she always is supposed to do it in the a.m. and p.m. whether she's wheezing or not), and she's STILL having pretty much zero symptoms.

I was convinced before that the reflux and asthma/bronch. were related, but now I'm 110% sure!

Hello , I am no doctor, but if the " what you think is aspiration " isn,t causing you too much probs, personally I wouldn,t do the peg, but of course that is personal choice.I know many , many people who have to clear all the muck, phlegm everytime they eat, and sometimes up to a couple of hours after a main meal, but to them its pretty natiral and expected, so they don,t get too worried , but the old chaps I care for , the one with lots of lung probs, that I posted about, it does worry him more but thats because he gets so worked up, he nearly passes out.Mostly a nerve thing by that time.I was telling his doc, that this is the time that sometimes he really becomes very depressed( he suffers severe depression) and this is when he gets really in the mood to either argue or find he can manipulate with the behaviour, making you feel lousy that you ( I ) had to be firm with him, he is 80 next birthday. And as I said may have to have another op to rectify things, but I am still watching to see how we go, as an other op is really going into danger zone.As far as the breathlessness, going up two flights of stairs, I think thats pretty good.I couldn,t do one flight without getting breathless.I really think that is quite natural, and probably won,t change much.Bronch and any lung prob causes tiredness. And we are not getting any younger are we?I don,t see why your bronch would worsen because of aspiration, just that aspiation will cause morecoughing fits and spasms etc.You say you are not losing weight , do you have a healthy appetite?Lots of people with bronch do lose their appetite, and especially if they have to cook, etc, then they get a bit lazy, so very different if someone prepares the meal, you generally will eat if someone does it for you.Just don't fancy food, never really hungry etc.My hands are really sore and swollen at present, I will come back to the osphagus surgery, after I go put some heat around my hands and take a few pain killers. You sound a little worried, but if you are naturally healthy person with bronch, I would keep very positive, and try and stay infection free.Must go, will post again later,Sandy(silly)

Hi there Danelle, I must disagree that aspiration is the main cause or

worsen bronch, I do 100% believe that all are related to bronch.

Aspiration and any of the related probs will and do aggrevate and for a

time worsen the situation, its natural that aspiration, asthma, and reflux

will upset the lot and of course aggrevate and even trigger things off like

asthma etc.

Asthma, sinus, reflux, bronch and many other things, but I certainly don,t

think any one is the cause or will actually worsen Bronch itself.

The fact is that all are related, and the fact that infections from and to

all these areas is what the

problem is that many face.

Not all with bronch have asthma, not all suffer reflux, but for those that

do, will more than likely, have triggers and aggrevators.

Of course that is only an opinion.

Many of the people I care for, have cared for, and those I know personally

who suffer our probs have had reflux surgery, and it worked for some and

definately not for others.

Reflux and its treatment varies so much in the individual, as do all the

other factors.

I also know several who have bronch, don,t suffer reflux, but do aspirate,

and its not caused them to get worse ever, except if they got an infection,

and again aspiration doesn,t mean you are certain to get an infection, as

long as you know how to cope/ treat yourself. what strategies and

precautions you take, every day hygiene, food prep, irrigation etc.

Again that is JMOHO.

Hope you don't mind.

I am glad to hear your little girl is doing well and it certainly sounds as

though she may be lucky enough to get a good grip on her probs and lead a

really good and productive life, whether with bronch etc.

She may not always have asthma, she maybe one of the lucky ones that

completely outgrow it, if not will learn to control it well.

God bless,

Sandy ( silly)

Nope -- don't mind at all! :-) And to clarify, I don't mean that ASPIRATION is the main cause of bronch. -- I meant that infection is the main cause of bronch. and aspiration can cause infection (but obviously not ALL infections).

I just know that aspiration CAN cause infection, and infections CAN worsen bronch. (we agree on that, I think). So, I think it's worth considering. I know a big area of discussion on this group is preventing infection, and controlling reflux/aspirations is one way to prevent infection. Also, the mucus itself is a great medium for infection, so anything that causes an increase of mucus is also worth controlling, if possible.

I also know that a lot of people with reflux believe that taking a medicine controls the reflux, but I learned (too late unfortunately) that the medicine controls the acidity of what comes up from the stomach, but does little to stop stuff from coming up. If the stuff is still coming up, it can still cause problems, whether it's acidic or not. It might help a certain percentage of people to be aware of that -- which is my reason for stressing it.

Take care!
