Maloney Presses for Answers on

Military Findings of Adverse Vaccine Events

A Message from SafeMinds

President, Theresa Wrangham

This week welcomed Congresswoman

Maloney's inquiries to the Department of Defense (DoD) regarding their

Vaccine Healthcare Center (VHC) 2007 presentation, which indicates that

as many as 1 in 50 military individuals immunized suffered serious

adverse events. The concerns that this presentation raises echos those of

many across the United States today with regard to gaps in vaccine safety

research and total health outcomes associated with immunization.

The DoD's presentation indicates that a significant number of the

military (1-2%) may have suffered serious adverse events from mandatory

immunizations. It is unclear if these numbers are inclusive of military

families, however, the presentation raises many compelling questions.

SafeMinds notes that many military personnel are required to be

vaccinated with influenza vaccine, much of which contains levels of

mercury above Federal Safety Guidelines. Congresswoman Maloney has asked

for clarification on the veracity of the VHC's statements regarding

adverse events possibly being linked to " multiple vaccines " as

well as whether their numbers include family members of servicemembers

and what impact, if any, these adverse events have on an individual's

ability to return to duty.

Congresswoman Maloney's strong voice in the need to understand DoD's

numbers and their relation to ongoing broader public concern is

encouraging. DoD's report also raises other observations - data on

adverse events exists and demonstrates a critical underlying need to

fully investigate adverse events, their frequency and any associated

conditions that may be linked to vaccines. This debate rages across our

nation today and requires investigation by agencies free from any vested

interest in the outcome.

As the flu season approaches and the expected push to immunize against it

follows, SafeMinds reminds our community that this vaccine continues to

be allowed on the market in versions containing mercury at levels

exceeding Federal Safety Guidelines.

Preparing for flu season

SafeMinds issues flu vaccine

brochure for 2008/2009 season

SafeMinds has just completed our

seasonal flu shot brochure for 2008/2009 and will be fulfilling mail

requests for this information beginning October 1st. SafeMinds believes

that the choice to immunize against the flu is a personal one and should

be based on the most current and accurate information available.

Today, the majority of influenza vaccine purchased by health departments

and professionals continue to be the mercury containing, while there is

ample supply of mercury free influenza vaccine. SafeMinds flu shot

brochure details which influenza vaccines contain mercury and which do

not, as well as informs on the dangers of mercury in vaccines and

efficacy of influenza vaccine. Below is basic information regarding

mercury and the flu vaccine:

Scientific studies have documented that the mercury used in vaccines

enters into the brain and can interrupt critical stages of brain

development. Mercury rapidly crosses the placenta and accumulates in the

fetus at even higher levels than the mother. All influenza vaccines offered this season are classified by the FDA

as Category C, which means either studies in animals have revealed

adverse effects on the fetus and there are no controlled studies in

women, or studies in women and animals are not available. Mercury containing flu vaccines contain 250 times above the levels

identified as a hazardous waste. Unused flu vaccine should be returned to

the manufacturer for appropriate disposal. A 2006 review published in the Lancet found that a placebo was as

effective as flu vaccine in children under two.

We highly recommend talking to your doctor about the availability of

mercury free influenza vaccine, as often mercury free influenza vaccine

must be requested well in advance from health care professionals. If your

provider does not provide a mercury free version, there may be flu shot

clinics in your area that already carry them, or a pharmacy willing to

order them.

For more information on mercury in vaccines, download our one page

Frequently Asked Questions flyer. We encourage you to pass this

information on to family and friends. Our flu shot brochure will be

available soon at

Alert! AutismCares Offers Support to

Families Affected by Hurricanes Gustav, Ike

AutismCares is a consortium of leading autism

organizations who have come together to support individuals with autism

and their families during natural disasters and other catastrophic life

events. SafeMinds is a proud participant of this program.

Hurricanes Gustav and Ike have recently left many families along the Gulf

Coast without food, clothing, and shelter. AutismCares has been in touch

with 35 families who are victims of the hurricanes, and have requested

financial assistance for critical expenses that cannot be covered in

other ways. These special requests are in addition to our monthly support

awards - 23 applicants in September.

Donations are needed to help families in need. To learn more, visit

Here is what readers are saying:

I just received a copy of The Autism File U.S.A. I must say Wow! Wow! and

Wow! " commented Alderson, EdM, an autism treatment

specialist. The magazine is just packed full of top quality articles and

great information from well-known researchers and practitioners in the

field.

What impresses me so much is the content. Simple, clean, impactful. Its a

tough one to put down once its opened, wrote Lori Mcllwain, co-founder

and Vice-Chairperson of the Board of the National Autism Association.

Teri Arranga, Director of Autism One, is The Autism Files Editor for the

US and Canada. Teri works closely with Polly Tommey, Editor-in-Chief, who

founded the The Autism File with her husband, nutritionist Jon Tommey,

over ten years ago. The journal covers the many diverse aspects of autism

from childhood through adulthood, including biomedical issues,

educational interventions and therapies, advocacy and practical advice

for daily life, in order to help children and families touched by autism

worldwide, Polly explained.

The Autism File debuts in the US and Canada with articles from autism

experts such as Dr. Edelson, Dr. Mumper, and Dr. Harry

Striking New Study -- Thimerosal

Threatens Males More

Reprinted from Age of Autism

Editor's Note -- Sometimes the most important information comes from

people who aren't even looking for it. Here is a case in point, brought

to our attention by Dr. Mark Geier and Geier. Three Canadian

researchers were experimenting with Thimerosal on mice for reasons having

nothing to do with the vaccine mercury-autism debate. But they stumbled

across the fact that Thimerosal was three times more toxic to male rats

than female rats -- " the first report of gender-selective toxicity

of thimerosal. " Given the way it mirrors the gender differences in

autism, this is a huge deal, even if preliminary. Below is the Geiers'

discussion of the study's significance and HERE is a link to the study

itself. As our AOA colleague Mark Blaxill says, " the facts tend to

cluster around a good hypothesis. " -- Dan Olmsted --

In this new study, " Gender-Selective Toxicity of Thimerosal "

published in the peer-reviewed journal of Experimental and Toxicologic

Pathology by Dr. R. Branch of the Departments of Medicine and

Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, University of Toronto, the

investigator examined the sex-specific toxicity of Thimerosal in a mice

model system.

This investigator described, " Thimerosal is an organic compound that

contains mercury and has been used historically as a preservative in

vaccines and pharmaceutical products. The breakdown product,

ethylmercury, in thimerosal-preserved childhood vaccines has been

suggested to be neurotoxic and to contribute to the etiology of

neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism; however, this supposition

is highly controversial. "

Visit The Age of Autism

The Age of Autism is the nation's first daily Web newspaper for the

environmental-biomedical community - those who believe autism is an

environmentally induced illness, that it is treatable, and that children

can recover. For the most part, the major media in the United States

aren't interested in that point of view, they won't investigate the

causes and possible biomedical treatments of autism independently, and

they don't listen to the most important voices - those of the parents.

The Coalition for SafeMinds (Sensible Action For Ending Mercury-Induced

Neurological Disorders) is a private nonprofit organization founded to

investigate and raise awareness of the risks to infants and children of

exposure to mercury from medical products, including thimerosal in

vaccines. SafeMinds supports research on the potential harmful effects of

mercury and thimerosal. Our mission is to end the health and personal

devastations caused by the needless use of mercury in medicines.
