WBRC-TV -- The University of Alabama at Birmingham's Civitan

International Research Center has been awarded a 5.2 million dollar

grant to research developmental diseases. The award will be used to

create the UAB Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research

Center(IDDRC).

UAB was given the 5-year grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver

National Institute of Child Health and Human Development as one of 12

institutions in the nation to receive the honor.

The IDDRC will replace the UAB Mental Retardation Research Center and

research into such diseases as autism, Rett Syndrome, cerebral palsy,

behavioral disorders or rare genetic diseases.

The IDDRC will house 74 investigators from 7 UAB schools and 19

departments currently involved in 60 research projects.
