Really???? I'm not being sarcastic either. That is honestly not what I've ever heard or been told. And my husband and I have even looked very seriously into both adoption and care on several occasions. We have several friends that have adopted. I've only ever heard about older kids.

One of the reasons that there are planty of non-Caucasian babies not being

adopted is they have very tough standards to allow adoptions through state

agencies, one of which is economic means. Since so many Black and Hispanic

families are living in poverty (for myriad reasons), it greatly curtails the

pool of eligible families to adopt these kids if they are to be adopted into

their own racial group.

Another factor is that there has been a strong movement in this country to

restrict people adopting babies that are not of the same race. So the Black and

Hispanic babies are not offered to White families who may otherwise be fully

qualified to adopt.

It is a tragedy because it is the babies who suffer over the politics of

adoption. No child should ever grow up thinking they are unwanted, unloved or

discarded.

And no, that does not mean I support abortion as bitrh control.

I worked with a woman who adopted two boys (brothers 6 and 7 years old) who had some medical issues because their biological mom was into crack. The boys were black and my coworker was white. A friend of mine, who is black, really had a problem with these kids being adopted by a white family. I mean she REALLY had a problem with it. We went back and forth about it. Isn't it better for the boys to be adopted by a loving family even if they were of a different race than to be in foster care where their special needs would probably not be addressed. My friend just thought they would not be taught about their heritage even though our coworker had told me she was teaching them about it. I always came back to the boys being loved but she (my friend) just couldn't let the race thing go. Our coworker adored

those boys. I personally would not adopt a child if the biological parents were still going to be in the picture.

Thank you for the explanation. Nothing is ever as straight forward as it seems anymore is it? There is politics in absolutely everything!

I can only speak from my own experience and where I was living at the time - Seattle. When it came to kids whose parental rights were terminated, young or old....disabled or not, the white kids were placed quickly. But I'm talking about big picture, not just infants and via the foster care system. Another sad story. Wish I could take some in and give them what I know i can - I need to fix my own bio-kids before my family falls apart first hopefully.

C'mon Lin, I'm brand new to this group but I already know your input is highly valued here. Why do you feel you need to defend on this adoption topic? i didn't see anything that could offend other than the Iowa comment but hey - I live in rural Mangohick, Virginia now so feel free to take a shot. Next towns over are Bumpass and Frog Level....go on - let me have it!

I grew up and Baltimore and lived in Seattle for a decade before moving to no-mans-land, VA a couple years ago. Big cities are very different when it comes to kids 'available' to adopt. Here in (near) Richmond - super small city, the rolls are relatively small. Hit the big cities and it's a heartbreaker. My former roomates have been guardians ad litem and emergency foster parents and adoptive parents. The stories that I've heard....

One time I went on the New York State website where they list children who can be adopted. It was horrible. They wrote specific facts about how the children were abused or what problems they had. I felt so bad for them. I can’t believe I live in a world that treats children like this. But, I have to say that I highly respect parents who adopt children who are known to have a disability. These should be our heroes.

I will agree that SOME people who adopt disabled children are heroes, but I must

point out that not ALL people who do so are. Marcus Feisel was removed from a

mother who could not care for him and given to foster parents who left him

rolled in a carpet in a dark closet while they crossed state lines for a weekend

family gathering, returning to find him dead. The Gravels adopted multiple

children with several different disabilities and were prosecuted successfully

for depriving them of comfort and making them sleep in bunks enclosed with

chicken wire. And there is this woman:

It is a sad truth that children with extraordinary needs are given into the

hands of people across the broad spectrum of huanity, some are exemplary, some

are adequate, and some a monsters of the worst sort.
