I saw him at a small local talk I think last year in a video on you tube. He said mentioned that he was personally affected by autism (but didn't specify if it was family or friend) and that his wife has had a lot of influence on his thinking about special needs since she was a special ed teacher.

I'd like to think he's sincere but I trust no one anymore

Kerrie

In McCain's speech tonight -- he mentioned autism! He said he'sfighting for families with special needs kids. Probably just lipservice, and maybe something I just want to hear....but I'm impressedthat he even mentioned it.Thoughts? Comments? It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. Did you see the piece on McCain? She got a degree in special ed and worked for poor migrant children with special needs when she was younger. I think we have a better chance for getting something done for our kids with the mccain/palin ticket.

but where is NOW? and is she running for president? I sooo hear

what you are saying....BUT I worked with Special Olympics when I was

young too. I felt pretty great about it and occasionally mentioned it

proudly and patted myself on the back quite strongly.

Of course - that was before I was mom to two ASD boys...and knew what

it meant. Ironic thing is that my Special Olympic charges were

Autistic (well I knew the word then but now I know what it means).

And at least now I know why they never seemed to respond to me and

don't take it personally anymore.

I'm JUST saying that our issues do not move the world at large YET

but we are getting there. I don't think we can vote in the hope that

one candidate over the other will rescue or help us.

Don't be so desperate to vote on this issue alone - (don't get me

wrong, if either candidate said they'd find out what happened and fix

us I'd vote 100% and wear T-shirts too). We're not going to get any

real info on this, I predict. I'd say vote with your gut, that's what

I'm doing and it has nothing to do with our platform since I'm not

willing to search through the few crumbs we've been offered.

I think it shows she has a heart for special needs children. She seems to have a heart for kids all around the world who are suffering. She has a history of helping suffering children - I don't think it's just politics.

I think it's fascinating that Hillary, Bill and mentioned autism

in their speeches. They didn't mention cancer (well, yeah, Hillary's

autism mom also had cancer), they didn't mention any other illness in

our country but autism. I think all of us should pat ourselves on the

back for making our country sit up and listen to us. Our children are

sick and they are everywhere and we need help. Will McCain do

anything about it? I have every hope. Lin has done a fantastic job

and I hope she is still in touch with him?

I know that my experience is limited in little ol' Pennsylvania, but

the wheeling and dealing that goes on behind closed doors is amazing.

You wouldn't believe it. (Well, you guys probably WOULD.)

Even those candidates with the best intentions probably can't get

anything done with all of the special interest groups.

Guess our government can no longer ignore the incredible rates of autism in this country and around the world. The "big secret" is out. They have to talk about it. Everytime I hear about "healthcare" reform, I cringe. Here is some "healthcare" reform that will affect a huge population of Americans - how about free hyperbaric oxygen, supplements, chelation, ABA, etc. to ALL kids in this country with autism. Autism has to easliy be the most expensive "disorder" on the planet. The IRS audited us last year because they could not believe what we were spending out-of pocket for autism-related medical expenses for our son. When I sent them all the information they requested, I included a cover letter explaining the wonderful world of autism and how health insurance pays for NOTHING that helps our kids. It just

breaks my heart when I think of all the kids that are hurting, sick and lost in their autism because the parents can not afford to do biomedical. Okay, I'll get off my soapbox - it's just so frustrating!!

Here is a transcript of exactly what he said:

I fight for Jake and Toni Wimmer of lin County, Pennsylvania.

Jake...

Jake works on a loading dock, coaches Little League, and raises money

for the mentally and physically disabled. Toni is a schoolteacher,

working toward her master's degree. They have two sons. The youngest,

Luke, has been diagnosed with autism. Their lives should matter to the

people they elect to office. And they matter to me. And they matter to

you.

But HOW do they matter? Would he extend them health insurance if

they didn't have any? Would he make sure this health insurance

wouldn't deny coverage for speech therapy because their child's

issues are " mental illness " or " developmental? "

I think we have to think beyond the " I'm one of you " and " I care "

platitudes and who mentioned autism in their speeches, and look at

how their platforms really make a difference.

I know that I read an article that

McCain is very good friends with Don Imus. Wasn’t it the Don Imus show

where he made mention of the autism epidemic for the first time? He is also on

friendly terms with Joe Liberman. He has also publicly stated that autism and

environmental causes need to be addressed. So, my thinking is that McCain is

definitely in the right company to try to get some real improvements in the

autism community. Shake up the CDC and the FDA for starters. There’s a

lot of self-dealing and corruption in those two agencies to keep him busy for

the first term.

Just my 2 cents.

actually McCain's commitment to autism goes back much further than that. He fought for us on the congressional floor way back in 2002 to get that "Lilly protection rider" out of the homeland security act. Verbally he is much more commited now.

Can the government make health insurance pay for autism related care? If you are talking about a government run health insurance - universal healthcare - that would be a nightmare. Your child might get some services when he/she is 30 years old. Government run programs are not known for running efficiently.

I keep going back to McCain's comments about Pharma. I know we've

brought it up here before. During one of the republican debates,

Romney and he went at it. Romney said scolded McCain telling him not

to " portray pharma like they are the evil bad guy " (something like

that) and McCain said " but they are! "

McCain has talked about how Pharma is causing alot of the problems we

are seeing with health care.

I recently attended a townhall style meeting led by Carly Fiorina.

The purpose of this meeting was to bring questions, concerns and

pressing issues together, to be presented back to McCain. When I

was given the floor, I reiterated the Senator's " words " with Mitt

Romney regarding Big Pharma. I also recalled a previous townhall

meeting at which he acknowledged a possible link between vaccines and

autism. I went on to briefly tell my grandson's story, including his

reaction to a flu shot, his subsequent poor health and his regression

into autism. I talked about biomedical treatments restoring his

physical health and helping him to recover from some of the

neurological damage. I also conveyed the need to clean up our vaccines

and make them SAFE, not just safer. I brought up the fact that the

Government has to stop mandating every vaccine that comes along and

give the parents the right to choose which, IF ANY vaccines will be

given to their children. I asked her to remind him of the fact that

the CDC has never met a vaccine that it doesn't like, and that

such " protective " agencies need to be closely monitored. I also

mentioned that we have the most highly vaccinated children in the

world, yet we have the highest number of chronically ill and learning

disabled children. I mentioned this group (among a few others), and

that we have WELL over 2000 members... who are capable of reaching

millions.

Ms. Fiorina took my comments along with all others very seriously. The

entire meeting was videotaped and was to be reviewed by McCain. She

also confirmed that indeed, McCain believes that vaccines can

cause adverse reactions. She said that he also believes those men and

women in the military, who feel that they have been adversley affected

by vaccines, as well. He is very aware of the autism epidemic in this

country and it's need to be addressed. Of course, the time to speak

was limited, but I left there with a more positive feeling than when I

arrived.

FWIW, I am confident that this got back to Sen. McCain. There were

MANY more issues that were brought up by various individuals that

evening, including a Representitive from Autism Speaks. This person

spoke prior to me, asking for more recognition of autism, insurance,

funding, etc. The coincidental timing couldn't have been more perfect.

My belief is that it would be political suicide if McCain came out

with a speech tomorrow, stating that Autism is caused by vaccines and

that we need to stop vaccinating our children until we know more. But

as others have posted here, we need to continue to hound our Canidates

on both sides of the ticket, to let them know that we WILL not shut up

and that we demand answers, one way or another. I have no clue yet how

the influences behind McCain, feel about vaccines. worked with

sick children in India and other poor Countries with unsanitary

conditions. My guess is that she may think, or at least have thought

at one time, differently. I don't know. She is also a woman who is in

tune with humanity and can recognize the potential dangers of our

present vaccine program. She comes from a military family and like

Gov. Palin, has sons who could be at risk for serious vaccine

reactions.

These are my thoughts and my comments... At this point, I think we may

be moving in the right direction. The message is out there. We have a

heck of a lot of voices, many coming from this group alone. Whoever

our next President and VP will be, they need to know that we are right

on their heels and we won't stop stepping on them until we see

results. There is no doubt in my mind that our precious National

Vaccine program is here to stay. No President will ever have the power

to abolish it. But the epidemics of autism, chronic illnesses and

learning disabilities can't be ignored. Parents who KNOW, even and

those who FEAR that there is a causal relationship to vaccines and

ASD, need to have their choice to withhold or control vaccinations,

respected. We have quite a few political activists on this group, in

spite of the precious little time that autism allows. But for every

person who sends off an e-mail or makes a phone call, if one more

person would take a few minutes to do the same, we can make even MORE

of an impact on our Candidates.

I will continue to do whatever I can to let each Candidate know just

how important these issues are to the future of our Country. The race

is neck and neck right now and I find this to be an exciting ride. In

two months, one of these men will be the new President of the United

States. But I want them both to know that 1 in 150 children in this

Country will neve be able to dream that same dream... and my question

is, " What are you going to do about it? "

-Trish

" In McCain's speech tonight -- he mentioned autism! He said he's

fighting for families with special needs kids. Probably just lip

service, and maybe something I just want to hear....but I'm impressed

that he even mentioned it.

I've seen photos of the both of them when they were younger and first married. He was very dashing.

In his outter Senate office in DC, the walls are covered with family photos. Bobbie Manning mentioned to me how rare that is. She has seen the inside of many a congressman's office. She said she's never run across that. The office is usually full of photos of the senator (or representaive) and other members of congress, elitists, hollywood personalities, etc. She said they are always self-serving photos of "important" people with the congressperson. She said it spoke highly of his character.

My favorite photo in his office is of Senator McCain at a parade in Arizona (can't recall the town at the moment - I think maybe Flagstaff). He's standing watching the parade with his infant son in a stroller. The Senator has jeans on. In the back pocket, his son's baby bottle. Just a guy enjoying the day with his son.
