Guest guest
Hi Amy, Just wanted to get back to you re your questions. The twins haven't had any sinus/adenoid/tonsil/ear tubes surgeries to date. We are hoping they will outgrow their large adenoids, etc. Considering surgery right now for either of them would be complicated by their floppy airways diagnoses. Ventilators for any surgery could aggravate their floppy airways and get them the tracheotomies we've been avoiding all this time. The theory is that by age 3 or so, their airways will be completely healed. So if the girls need any surgery, the best time is after age 3. So the breathing issue at night is dealt with by giving steroids, saline, bulb-syringing, and raising the tops of their mattresses, while making sure they sleep with their heads raised, too. (Sometimes they spin upside-down in their sleep and have a harder time trying to breathe.) Pulmonary hypertension is measured when the heart sonograms are performed. Pressure is measured in every section of the heart and lungs and then analyzed. As the child grows, the pressure can get worse depending on the hole size and placement. It's more complicated then that, but I don't understand it all. If there's any question as to whether a child is a candidate for surgery or not, the cardiologist then consults with the cardiovascular thoracic surgeon for a decision. Sounds like your girls' ASDs are small enough to close on their own, or at least, do not cause any pulmonary hypertension. Have your girls had heart sonograms? Maybe with certain size and placed ASDs, they don't do heart sonograms... just a guess. Better go. 's down for a nap, the twins are back in school (after a long spring break). The twins have a speech appointment today after school so I need to get ready to pick them up and wake up , too. I bet your girls are really cute! I do miss it when our girls were that age! Take care. Regards, Granata Mom to Haley & Nikki, 30 mos twins, both w/DS, & , 11 mos son RE: Digest Number 1794 Thanks ,It sounds like I am going through a lot of what you went through. Have yourgirls had their sinuses/tonsils/adenoids out? My girls are not on oxygen butwe use lots of saline and suction. How do you know if the girls hearts arecausing hypertension? We have had no indication of problems with theirhearts but they are small. They only had one very small ASD each. I guess Iwill just have to see what the ENT and the cardiologist says in the nextcouple of months.
