The concept of

“performatory psychology†is so new that you don’t find it on the web, but it

has its roots in the work of Lev Vygotsky (1924 -1934): we grow emotionally and

become who we are by continuously performing who we are not. In this

workshop, we will explore the relationship between performance and development.

We will practice leadership skills for DMTs that can be gleaned from improv

games: putting aside agendas, interpretations, and judgments, listening/looking

for the invitation/offer in the movement and words of others, and building a

movement, story/theme with others. Advanced students, new and seasoned

therapists are welcome.

Joan Ingalls Ed. D., BC-DMT, LCAT, LMHC completed her dance therapy

training with Shirley Weiner and Ottie sen, and earned a MA in psychology

and dance therapy from Goddard College in 1978. She earned a doctorate in the

psycho-social study of human movement from Teachers College-Columbia University

in 1987. She worked as a dance therapist at Mt Carmel Guild in Newark, NJ, and

on the Discreet Unit at Creedmoor for the NYS OMRDD. She was an intake

coordinator and counselor for the NY chapter of AHRC, and an adjunct professor

at the College of New Rochelle, College, and the New Hampshire

University System. For over 20 years, she specialized in helping athletes and

performing artists prepare mentally and emotionally for competition and

performance. She completed a 2-year training program in social therapy in 2004.

She currently maintains a private practice in social therapy in the West

Village.
