Guest guest
Hi , Welcome to our group. I'm Marcia. I live in Central Oregon, a small town, near Bend, named Sisters. I have Sara and . Sara has DS and does not. They are 7-1/2. They joined big brother, Lucas, who is now 11. Right now, with Sara, we are dealing with a sinus infection that has not gone away. The bug that is causing it is resistant to the five antibiotics she has been on, so we are now being referred to an ENT specialist in Portland for a possible drainage procedure. Her thing has definitely been sinus infections, but she has always gotten over them, with antibiotics until now, which is somewhat scarey to me. It sounds like your boys are both doing very well. You have joined a very supportive group, who between us have lots of experience. I look forward to learning more about your family and if all goes well, I would like to join the Seattle get-together, as I have a sister who lives in Redmond, WA. Guest guest
Good to see you here. I'm hoping this get together around Seattle I hear about happens so I can see the little guys in person. One thing about this listserve you loose the idea that its a pretty unique thing to have twins where one or more has ds. Talk to you soon. Guest guest
I’m a new member and need to thank Sherrill for introducing me to this list. I have a 6 ½ yr old son, , and twin daughters, a and Gretchen, who are 2 ½. Gretchen has Down Syndrome. We knew at about 20 weeks from an ultrasound and amnio results. Once we understood what this meant, we embraced our new life and have been running with it ever since. This rollercoaster ride is certainly a wild one! We have been extremely lucky and have had no significant health issues. Of course there were some minor heart issues, that resolved themselves but other than tubes in her ears, and a bout with croup, we have not been inpatients at the hospital. Gretchen has been hitting her developmental milestones a little behind her sister. She began walking just before her 2nd birthday and has not stopped moving since then. Her expressive speech is her most delayed issue. However her receptive language is right where it needs to be, so we are hoping that her expressive speech will come soon. I guess at this point, if any list members have any advice for the whole turning 3 process, I would love to hear comments or suggestions. We are set to start Gretchen’s IEP process in September with the local school and have spent much time preparing our parents concerns, strengths and goals part of the written IEP. I would especially like to hear how you were able to keep your twins together. We live in Massachusetts and our town has an integrated preschool program. I have been told there are no guarantees of keeping the girls together since the model students are selected by lottery. We want to keep the girls together as much as possible in the early years for the uncertainty the later years hold as far as schooling goes. (We hope they can be in the same grade forever, but will cross that bridge when we need to!) I have received several suggestions to include my “typically” developing twin in the IEP to ensure she can be part of the integrated program, but I don’t know how that will fly with the local school district. I look forward to being part of this list! Inga
