Guest guest
He is not yet potty trained and we were told he would have to be before he went in to the devopmental K. Class. , Who are they to say that? They can't! The placement is based on the best place for your son, based on his IEP. The para would also be based on his needs. Having sent three children through our system (Illinois), I would tell you to send Noah to kindergarten, with a para, and whatever he needs to help him succeed. Zack (Ds) is 11, and will be going into 7th grade (Jr. High), and he went to kindergarten at age 5. Not potty trained, and with a para, but it took a lawyer to get him there. Matt (PDD, visual and hearing impairments) is 10 and in 4th grade. He also went to kindergarten, not potty trained and with a para. All it took was the "threat" of my lawyer. (Ds), was preparing to go to kindergarten, not potty trained and with a para, and no argument from the school this time, before he was killed. And Sami (no Dx yet, but something) will be going to kindergarten when she reaches five. Potty trained or not, and with a para. Because that is where each of my children belonged. With their peers, learning academics from their teachers, and social skills from their friends. We have never regretted our decision to fight for them. You need to visit the kindergarten setting and decide it that is the best place for Noah. Visit before school is out, so you can see the routine. And remember, these kids have been there all year, so of course, they will be doing well. They are ready for 1st grade. Don't let them scare you that Noah won't keep up. Even is he doesn't, that is not the point. The point is the LRE for Noah to learn the things that the team has put on his IEP. Make a list of your reasons for the setting you chose and present them at the IEP. Good luck with your decision. Noah is such a cutie! And don't worry, he will change his opinion on girls, soon enough. Zack has girls falling all over him! Guest guest
I would certainly check into the regulations because I don't see how they can keep Noah out of the Developmental Kindergarten just because he isn't potty trained yet. 's case is different where as he is still in diapers at 24yrs. of age but was never kept out of the Special Ed. Program in our Public School because he had to have his diapers changed. When you do an IEP for Noah that could be one of the things they should have to work on with him is potty training. Maybe by then he will be potty trained and that wouldn't be a problem to get him in but I'm just saying if he isn't that shouldn't be a reason for him not to be in that class. After all it was a long time ago that was in that age group and it wasn't a problem here for him even when he got older and they had to change him, that was just a part of the job they had to do. Yes you can certainly insist an aid be with Noah. I would suggest that you check out this Web sight. http://www.wrightslaw.com it is a good site that will help you with all types of Educational questions. Judy & Bob Parents to 24yrs. the joy of our lives who happens to have ds & multiple disabilities and 31yrs. electrician -- School We have a choice to make regarding Noah who was 5 in February. We can either leave him in the Early Childhood development class he has been in.(This year there we 3 others in his room and they are all autistic). This class was half a day and will be next year also. Or we can send him to All day developmental Kindergarten At the elementary school. Actually both rooms are in the elementary. What I am asking is what the opinion of those who have older children are. He is not yet potty trained and we were told he would have to be before he went in to the devopmental K. Class. Can I ask for an aid to be with him. There will be most likey around 20 children. I am really nervous about this as he has had a small class. We Live in Southwestern Michigan and I Home School my other children so I need to know what options I have if anyone else knows. Noah also uses very few words. On the other hand he is a very smart young man. If you ask him he can point to animals ( if you ask where is the pig Ect.), Knows his body parts, Dresses him self, Can set the table, Will help clear the table, Knows how to start the dish washer, washer and dryer, Knows how much grain to give our miniature horses, matches colors, can draw a circle, and make an n and o. He also knows how to start the computer, work the Video player and also the dvd player. He has even tried to get on AOL and tried to type in passwords. Yet he doesn't read as far as we know but he loves to look at books and have them read to him. He is also hearing impaired and does sign. Sorry this is so long but we need to make some choices and so I need some help. Thanks in advance. In Michigan This is Noah with 2 of his friends who are 3 He didn't like the one putting her arms around him. Guest guest
, My vote would be to put him in the developmental K. He will learn a lot from his more verbal peers and it seems clear (from the things he can already do) that he is learning some very complex things in spite of not being very verbal (yet.) I think in the K class he will be exposed to more and more advanced concepts which he is probably ready to learn. Guest guest
My vote would be to put him in the developmental K This is what we are leaning towards. It is just hard to let them go. Especially all day. He was sooo sick when he was little and I also have 2 graduating from High School so It is a mixture of emotions. Plus the last 2 years even though they were half day his older sister (one of the ones graduating) volunteered in his class room. So she was there with him. He is growing up and so are they (the 2 older ones).
Guest guest
I'm big onoral motor exercises, I agree with the oral motor skills. Noah needs them big time. He has very low tone in his mouth area. He still struggles with his tounge hanging out. Abe on the other had has no problem with keeping his tounge in. Of course Abe doesn't have the large tounge Noah has.\ Abe's is more like a Lizard tounge. This is how the kids describe it. LOL
Guest guest
, it seems most of us here agree to put Noah in the all day developmental Kindergarten, potty training can be included as a goal to be working on. Make them set up a " visual schedule " for his class room, set good speech AND oral motor goals and exercises daily!!!! I'm big on oral motor exercises, Tara {and most kids with Ds} have low tone, when they do have vocabulary, no one can understand them, soo, oral motor exercises go hand-in-hand with speech therapy, BUT don't be fooled into thinking your speech therapist can deliver this therapy, ask for credentials and experience, most all of our kids need oral motor therapy!!!!!!! Good-luck!! Gail Mom to Bobby 10, Jillian 7 1/2, and Tara{Ds} 5 > > We have a choice to make regarding Noah who was 5 in February. Guest guest
Hi , I am Mom to Sara (ds) and 9--year old twins. Having been the journey through Kindergarten, I will share with you the decisions we made for Sara and Gabe. They have Nov. birthdays, so when Sara was 5 in September (and not potty-trained), she began 1/2 day Kindergarten, with a full-time aide and a goal to work toward being potty-trained. (Her twin brother began the same class). She was put on a schedule and taken to the bathroom three or four times during the 1/2 day that she was at school. She was fully potty-trained a month or two after she turned six, so the school schedule really helped her with that. The next year, Sara stayed in Kindergarten, but did a full day and Gabe went on to first grade. Sara is now in second grade with the same class she did full-day kindergarten with and we are pleased with her progress. In terms of speech therapy--the four years she has been in school, she has had 1/2 hour a day 4-5 times per week with the same speech therapist. If you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail me. Marcia Mom to Sara (DS) and 9 and Lucas
