Gail, Yes and Dayton had really bad cases of sleep apnea.. not sure all the #'s anymore... just enough we had to go on o2 while waiting surgery. They both stayed 2nights.. but did extremly well. was 2 1/2 yr and bounced back quickly. Dayton was 18months and really bounced back the next day.

They both had good meals the following night. Of course all soft.

If you recall last yr... had another sleep study again sleep apena, the cause was a hernia. We had surgry within a few weeks. She had gotten to where she would not sleep at night. I have to say.. Her and Dayton both are sleeping all night.. although still get up too early..but that is ok.

Now .. is batteling with it.. but he is on o2 24hrs a day.. so this a + for him. The drs already want to put tubes in the ears and take the T & A out.. but he only 8months and tubes are not made small enough for his ears. So patience all we can give .

Good Luck..

Hi ,

No they didn't suggest O2, we're hoping surgery will be very soon,

although the ENT did explain to me that Tara will be in ICU for one, if

not two nights post OP, because of wanting to monitor her vitals and

sometimes children with Ds have a slower time recovering their blood

oxygen saturation levels from surgery........................YIKES!

I'll keep you posted.

How did you children do post OP?

Did they have sleep apnea too?

Hi Gail,

Sara had her tonsils out when she was almost three. She did have some episodes of sleep apnea, but we did not do a sleep study; however, just recently did one, because she still has some episodes of quite labored breathing when she sleeps and some apnea--we will get the results back in a week.

Sara was hospitalized two nights after her tonsillectomy, but not in ICU. She probably would have done o.k., if she had not biten her tongue while under anesthesia. She bit it hard and it was swollen huge, so when Sara had anesthesia for sinus surgery, I told the anesthesiologist about her prior experience. She did have a respiratory therapist stop by while she was hospitalized to check her breathing and if I recall, she was doing fine and then once home, her recovery progressed well.

Let us know when Tara is scheduled--I know she will do just fine, although, I do remember the pre-surgery jitters, as I'm sure you're familiar with what little has been through.

Oh, a book that helped me that I read was "Medical Concerns for Children With Down Syndrome".

Marcia,

Thanks for your concern and support, and you hit it on the head, I am

JITTERY!!!!!!!

Tara is scheduled for surgery, Wed the 26th of this month.

The ENT wants her to go to ICU post OP and spend the night there because

it's the only good way to monitor, esp with her blood sat's so low

during her sleep study.

Hopefully, she'll go to peds the next day, and then home? Guess it will

all depend on when she decides to start drinking again?

Ofcourse I will not be leaving her side, I even get to accompany her to

the OR suite, and watch her as they put her out!!!!

I'll keep you all posted,

Thanks again!

Gail.........Bobby 9, Jillian 6 1/2, and Tara{Ds} 3 3/4
