Guest guest
Had a weird thing happen a couple weeks back. I have 2 kids in private school and Hannah is in public school. The older 2 got out the end of May and we kept talking about how they'd be on vacation, no school etc. Hannah goes over to her PECS notebook that I put together for her and gives me the " vacation " card. It's a picture of a girl tossing her books and pencils in the air. That has been in her notebook for some time but we've never used it and she has never given it to me before. We're like is this a fluke? How did she put that together? I wish I could crawl in her skin for a day. Mostly tonight though I just feel sad. Perhaps it's from national funeral, to attending a wedding tonight, to Hannah's school almost being done. There is a teacher that I want Hannah to have next year but because Hannah's classroom is a self-contained II class and this teacher has a self-contained I class it will take an act of God for it to happen. Hannah would have to be upgraded from severely disabled to just disabled. (Sounds like a computer program - upgrade, be more user friendly etc.!) The teacher I want is youngish, single, Christian, has great ideas, loves DS kids and has a special interest in autism. Hannah is doomed to have the same teacher for the next 2 years that she had this year and I'm not crazy about her. This is the lady that sent my kid home on the bus knowing we had an IEP scheduled, is being sued by another family because she wasn't giving their daughter the Pediasure that she required without telling the parents. What are my options here ladies? I'm even thinking about homeschooling like I did my other two but I'm not sure that's the best option for her. She likes routine and my stay at home life with the other two (one with Tourette's) is not routine. And do I say it? Sometimes I'm glad that she's gone and I can have a break. Well, ladies, what would you do? What are my options? Thanks for hearing me out. Blessings, a (Drew 13 Tourette's Syndrome, OCD, ADHD?, Marissa 9, Hannah 7 DS/Aut)
Guest guest
Joan's words are GOLD. I just printed out the outline of how to improve service delivery for our children. I had one thought reading your note about self contained 1 and 2. If getting her into the other class is an UPGRADE (its like plane seats!!) than it is also a less restrictive environment. One thing I have learned this year is that using the language of the laws we need to follow (and by the same token that the schools MUST follow) force the school to justify WHY a more restrictive environment is in your child's best educational interest. Options for less restrictive environment must be explored BEFORE a more restrictive placement is the option. THUS in your letters to the school, requesting a less restrictive environment than her current placment - and outlinging what opportunities she would have to associate with more typical peers enhancing her opportunities for modeling appropriate behavior, etc. might give you a key OUT of the other class. I'm looking for a slam dunk here - I can hear the SWISH into the basket- a home run- a touch down - a goal - and HAAANNNAAAHH is the WIIIINNNEEERRR!! If Hannah's needs could be met in the other classroom there is no reason why she couldn't be changed. I wouldn't use the teacher as an excuse other than saying that she can provide in her classroom can't be provided in another. Do both teachers have a background in autism? You need to plan out your request carefully. Good luck. Charlyne Mom to Zeb 11 DS/OCD/ASD?
Guest guest
I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW, THAT I AGREE WITH YOU ABOUT THE LABEL NOT HAVING ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE PLACEMENT. HOWEVER, HERE IN WHEELING WEST VIRGINIA (I HAVE ONLY LIVED HERE FOR 3 YEARS, MOVED FROM FAIRFIELD, CONNECTICUT) THEY DO PLACE THE CHILDREN, BY THEIR LABEL, INCLUSION IS ALMOST UNHEARD OF HERE, EXCEPT FOR ART, PHYSICAL ED. MUSIC, AND MEDIA, AND RECESS. THEY HAVE A SEVERE AND PROFOUND SELF CONTAINED CLASSROOM, A MODERATE SELF CONTAINED, AND A MILD SELF CONTAINED. KYLE IS IN THE MODERATE, AND IT HAPPENS TO BE WORKING, SO I DON'T ARGUE, BUT I WILL TELL YOU THAT IF IT WASN'T I WOULD BE MAKING MYSELF HEARD, KYLE WAS IN A MAINSTREAM CLASSROOM IN CT. HE DID 2 YEARS OF KINDERGARTEN AND 1 YEAR OF 1ST GRADE, HE HAD A 1 ON 2 PARAPROFESSIONAL AND WAS PULLED OUT TO GO TO THE RESOURCE ROOM WITH SPECIAL ED TEACHER FOR MATH AND LANGUAGE ARTS. SAME OR OT, PT., AND SPEECH. iI THINK AS KYLE GOT OLDER MAINSTREAMING WAS TO DIFFUCULT, THE ONLY THING HE WAS GAINING THERE WAS SOCIAL . THE WORK WAS WAY OVER HIS HEAD, AND EVEN THOUGH THEY MODIFY ALL HIS WORK, AND LOOKED WAY TO DIFFERENT AND I FELT THIS HURT HIS SELF ESTEEM. THAT IS JUST A PERSONAL FEELING. IT IS AMAZING TO ME HOW MUCH BETTER THE SPECIAL ED WAS IN CT. COMPARED TO HERE, AND THE OPTIONS OPEN TO YOU ~~ VI MOM TO TAMMY (20 TODAY!!) TANIA (17) AND KYLE 12 (DS AND PDD (ons)
