Guest guest
It could be the fit of the frames. Does he wear sunglasses?? We always start people with cool sunglasses and then work to " inside sunglasses " . Also the bridge of the nose and the ear pieces (temples) need to be comfortable. We sometimes get lenscrafters to put soft wire temples on as they fit better and keep glasses from sliding on the nose. How did you ever get him to wear hearing aids? Elie would benefit from one as he has significant loss in one ear, but he can only bear wearing big cuff earphones - nothing IN the ear and his ears are too tiny for behind the ear wearing. Guest guest
Hi Louise, I have yet to find a way to have Zeb wear his glasses for any length of time. The glasses make him nuts with the sensory issues. I have had them adjusted so many times. The dr simply told me that when he could appreciate the difference in the eyesight with them on he would wear them. I have let it be his choice. He stills sits a foot away from a 32 " tv screen. Guest guest
Hi Louise, how about reinforcing for really short periods of time for wearing the glasses when you feel he would most be likely to keep them on, point out things in the distance he may have not seen before, or parts of a movie that might interest him. Slowly move the increments of time up as he starts to tolerate them more. Make the reinforcer really special, something he can have only after wearing his glasses for the set amount of time. Using a timer for this works really well as it makes the timer the bad guy, not you! I use it to time things like amount of TV to be watched and time sitting on the toilet, etc. If he won't wear them, just be as neutral as you can and tell him too bad, no reinforcer, try next time. It will probably be a slow process, but I'm sure you have gathered much patience through the years! Do you or your dh wear glasses? You could model the appropriate behavior for him and point out other people around him who wear glasses that he may or may not know. It will be a whole new desensitization exercise for you! Good luck, let us know how it goes, I dread the day has to wear them! He was very close once, but his eyes " grew " , so I've dodged the bullet for now, but one day it will be our turn! Joanne Mom to (9), ds,asd, das Glasses is 41 and just got glasses for distance a week ago. Thought he would be as excited as when he got his hearing aids; as he would be able to see clearer. Tried them the first weekend he was home for watching TV and a movie but he wouldn't leave them on. Tried again this weekend when he came home, again wouldn't leave them on. Took him back to Lens Crafters (he got free exam and glasses under the Lions and Lens Crafters Gift of Sight programs) to have the lens checked to be sure correct. All was well but he just won't wear them. Plan is to keep the glasses here and when he comes home on weekends and we go to a movie will try to get him to wear them slowly. Guest guest
Irma thanks for your thoughts on the glasses. We decided to keep the glasses here and work with him over time. Congratulations to on his First Communion. Hope you are all feeling better soon. Louise
Guest guest
Hi Louise, What you've had written on regards the hearing aid, these were the same steps that it took for to wear his glasses. use to bump into walls and once they were on he realized that they had helped him see. Of course the timing of getting use to wearing them due to sensory issues did take some time. We've gone through numerous glasses and back then when he was about 3 y/o trying to find the right pair was hard as they had to be pretty small frames to fit him. Of course marketing is good with selections these days and back then cost wise was not too expensive as now when purchasing them these days. I have to purchase them feather-light, of course all the extra like the UV, non-scratchable, cables around his small ears to name with time I would know exactly what to look into for his eyewear. The only time will wear his glasses are only during our outings and to school. Out the door he knows he needs them on and when he returns home off goes the glasses. Yep, at home he does not wear them but I'll take what I could get. Good luck with when he is ready to wear them and of course the getting use to them on. Bless my young man he is under the weather these past days he probably picked it up from me as he has been like a shadow around me and I'm still trying to shake it off, but thought I share that finally had his First Holy Commuion this past Sunday. He did great! Father had broken the bread in half and he opened his mouth and accepted it. Made a funny tasting look face but other than that, another accomplishment. I had even taken him to a 16th (B-day)debutant on Saturday and another survival day. Taking him out into the community more, these past days just made me feel good as in the past it was not easy and loved that he was included and accepted as a person. He was such a gentlemen. Hugs! Guest guest
I love those silent red time timers! Good luck with your bad guy timer! I find a small portable magnetic one works great! Joanne Glasses Thanks Sara, Joanne and Charlyne for your thoughts and ideas. Sara (41) began to wear his first hearing aid in the left ear when he was 11. I will never forget that day as he got in the car the driver's seat came forward and hit the horn, the delight on his face to hear the horn was priceless. There were times when he was running down a school hallway when attending a Cub Scout meeting and the noise was too much and he pulled the aid out and threw it. But mostly from the beginning he has done well with the aids, he got his aid for the right ear when he was 32 and from the beginning no problem. Someone has to always put them in his ears each morning but each night he takes them out, opens the battery compartment, so the battery doesn't drain during the night, or damage the aids. They are the first thing he wants in, in the morning. Sun glasses are one of his likes but he doesn't wear them. This began when Happy Days was on and the Fonz wore them and then the Blues Brothers. Can't tell you how many sunglasses we have gone through over the years, try to find them in garage sales or the $1 store. We go through a ritual of him having his Dad tighten the screws then I have to clean them, if we get in the car soon after that he hands them to me again to clean. But he only puts them in his shirt neck or carries them in his pocket, rarely does he put them on, and then only for a short time to be cool. At some point for whatever reason he breaks the temples off, in recent years he seems to hold on to them longer. Right after getting the new glasses he bent them out of shape but luckily the technician was able to put them back in shape. Joanne we did try during a recent movie right after he got the glasses. I thought since he realized his hearing aids were so helpful once he saw clearer he would leave them on. One of his favorite movies is coming up, Harry Potter, so hope to get him to wear them longer. Yes, Andy and I do wear glasses and 's siblings also wear them, when not wearing their contacts, I mentioned that to him but doesn't seem to sink in. I didn't need them until older and the TV was blurry. That is also why I thought he might wear them to watch his TV. Charlyne has also sat on the floor right in front of the TV all his life, in the beginning we thing to hear it better. I think what your doctor told you will be the same for when he appreciates the difference in his eyesight, guess it will just take time, patience, and ongoing times to have him wear them. Joanne I will have to try the regular timer to see how that works so it can be the bad guy. We recently got one of the Time Timers with the red but it is to be used only for things wants and it works beautifully for . Louise

Guest guest
why not let him have a pair to try and wear even for a few minutes daily, more chance to get use to them and realize hey i can see better. instead of just the weekends he is home. shawna

Guest guest
I see, that is very important, completely understand. I know nathan has a springboard which is like a dynavox system uses pecs etc, anyways the school wouldnt ever buy one, one reason is they thought too much money an dnathan would easily break it. But he has been very good with it, then the teacher put it in a bag of clothes etc and broke it, thankfully it was just a connection come loose. I was peeved. shawna
