Donna/potty training suggestions???

Hi Donna! Have a great time on your trip - you deserve a wonderful week in

Italy. Hopefully I'll be able to catch Maddie the star on TV - I'll try to

watch the

list for when it will be shown.

Things are busy here, as usual. I can't remember if I let everyone know that I

got a great score on my grant application, which should be funded. I'm more

relieved than happy.

We're potty training intensely - this is the third day with sitting on

the potty chair every 15-20 minutes while he's awake. The first day, no

success on the potty, but we trained him to sit every time we would sing a

potty song. He wet his pants about a dozen times, but never peed in the potty,

although he must have spent 25% of his time sitting there all day. Second

day, he only wet his pants about 6 times, or about half, but again, nothing on

the potty chair. He intensely dislikes the big potty, so that won't help.

Today,

he stayed dry for a good 3 hours, but peed in his pants with nothing in the

potty chair. Both Mom and Dad have modeled, peeing into his potty chair (not

easy for adults), and have had Betsy Wetsy model peeing into the potty. We

have modeled giving Betsy Wetsy an Oreo after she goes, and then letting

enjoy it. When we even get one drop in the potty, we give him an

Oreo for encouragement (infrequently). We have tried giving him water, and

even pouring water on his penis. No stream of pee. Still, we sing the potty

song and have him go through the motions every 15-20 minutes! We figure

we have already come a long way getting him to sit on the potty chair, and he

is holding it in. He doesn't mind being wet (during the day, he is wearing

nothing but regular underwear and pajama bottoms, so he gets soaked). His

skin is starting to redden from all the wetness, but he doesn't show any signs

of minding it. But how to get him to go??? Any suggestions would be greatly

appreciated.

We are potty training him now because he has five days off from school for the

Spring holiday. Poor baby - yesterday he turned 7, and all we are doing is

potty training! He had a big family party last weekend, and will celebrate at

school next Monday.

Happy birthday to !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck with the potty training Ginny. We are setting Seth on the potty

when we change his diaper, but nothing intense yet. Maybe this summer.

Poor baby - yesterday he turned 7, and all we are doing is

potty training! He had a big family party last weekend, and will celebrate

at

school next Monday.

Hey Ginny,

Thanks. I swear, the little bug knows we are leaving. You can't

believe the messes she has gotten into in the last two days (the topper was

finding

all the newly folded sheets and towels stuffed in the toilet).

Anyway, Happy 7th B-day to the gentleman!!!!! Good luck with

the potty training. Sounds like you've tried all the tricks. I know you

don't want to hear this, but they do it when they're ready. All my kids did

it at different times....n was well over 3 by the time we had him

trained. Hang in there, and I hope he gets it soon!!!!!

I will be setting myself to no mail, Guys. Am leaving in a couple

everyone does a little different I know some do the potty train in a week thing,

we started by schedule training nathan just during the day hours eg: school

time, and then as he started to stay dry while on this schedule we would add on

to this schedule like he would go when he got home aournd 3-ish, and then at 5

before supper, and as he stayed dry we continued to add on, he just finally

bacame night potty trained over the last year or so with an occasional accident.

We always sang happy songs and danced when he did void and bm'd (rare) in the

toilet, the bm came later after we figured out he was constipated and got him on

a regimen then things really stared going the trained way. we tried many types

of encouragement to figure out ways to get him to go on own. Seems ages ago but

really wasn't, he started going on own around 9yrs of age varing from the

schedule and using toilet. We still occasionally remind him to go if weve

noticed its been awhile, he has the tendency to retain all day if wants, and the

school sends him around the same times everyday to keep in routine as he likes

this, he no longer wears pull-ups oh that was an issue too making sure you have

pants your child can do independently makes a big diff too. STart off slow, like

just moring for a couple hours until he can mangae this and gradually add on.

One has to remember also the childs developmental age, nathan is biologically 12

going on 13 but developmentally is 4-6yrs of age as of last cog eval, which is

why we didn't see the independence more until he was around 9. Oh, another thing

we did, as nathan didn't care if he was wet or poopy whatever, was have him help

clean himslef up each time, thinking that he would get, its easier to just use

the toilet than to have to change my clothes or take a shower, this was a

benefit cause even now if he does have and accident he knows he is not in

trouble just needs to go change and he will right away, I don't even have to ask

or remind him. shawna
