Guest guest
Hello, I just joined your group today. from Columbia, SC, had told me about it a long time ago, but in the midst of my busy life, I had forgotten about it. I am happy I can be part of your group now. I am a mother of two precious girls - who is 9 and in 3rd grade, and who is almost 8 and in a special class at school. has Down syndrome and autism. She also has a hearing impairment (anyone else with these three combinations? - please write and tell me). is one-of-a-kind and the love of mine and 's life. She reminds us daily of unconditional love. She keeps us laughing with her funny ways. She inspires us with how much she is learning and how she is growing by leaps and bounds. Her sister is awesome. She is tender-hearted and extra thoughtful. She is strong and confident and smart. She tells me she is proud to have a sister like . I feel proud of them both. I have several things I'm doing with to make sure she has the best shot at everything in life to meet her potential. She is on a vitamin regimen; she has lots of people who love her and interact with her at church with friends, at school, at home; she is getting outpatient OT once a week with a concentration on sensory integration; she will soon be starting listening therapy (yes, even with her hearing impairment); I involve her with the community as much as possible in regular family activities; we belong to a WONDERFUL local autism support group where and my family are readily welcomed and accepted (Deanna and Ken Dickson are the moderators). A little about myself. Besides being 's and 's mom, I am a service coordinator with the Department of Disabilities and Special Needs here in my county. I started off teaching school and was in the public school system for nine years. Then I switched to social work and started out as an early interventionist with DDSN. I did that for 2 1/2 years, then I had . After staying home for nine months, I got back in the work force as a service coordinator with DDSN. It's no coincidence that I was an EI before I had because that prepared me for her in a lot of ways (nothing ever completely prepares you, but it helps). What's even more amazing is, when I went back as a service coordinator and got the autism caseload, about 2 years later I found out had autism. So God was preparing me each step of the way. Someone said I better stick with my job because if I go to something else who knows what I might be getting prepared " for next?? (that was a joke) ) I'm looking forward to chatting with everyone and sharing and giving and receiving good information and encouragement for/from all of you. Are you going to the Family Connection workshop on the 20th? I was hoping if you were, we could hook up. Re: Hi everyone! Thank you Charlyne! I'm looking forward to getting to know you all. Guest guest
Thank you ! I won't be making it to the FC workshop this time - maybe we can bump into each other another time. Do you have your photo posted on here? I couldn't remember your son's name. I just posted one of me with the two girls. > > Hi Amy, > > Welcome to the group.
