Guest guest
Hi All, Had an IEP revision meeting on Monday with Hannah's teacher, psych, PT, SLP. Teacher wanted to redo goals as Hannah wasn't going to meet any of them by May. Took my neighbor with me who does OT with Hannah and is in tune with her. Am I wrong in making Hannah's goals more living skills than academic right now? She is 7 and she needs to work on dressing, (those fine motor skills suck), toileting, eating (we're becoming an attraction in restaurants esp. with flipping the spoon and dumping stuff all down the front of us), speech and reading. I think she will be capable of reading and I bought the " Teaching Down Syndrome Children to Read " for the teacher. I requested that they put more academic stuff on the computer. She hates markers and will throw them but she has never thrown a mouse! The other thing I coming to realize is that she needs a new teacher. This lady always seems so stressed out and she teaches 1st-3rd grade. 7 kids, 1 teacher and 3 aides. I can't see Hannah being in there for 2 more years. One of the students transferred out and when I talked to the mom about it she said that the teacher wasn't feeding her daughter her Pediasure at lunch without telling the parents. She did this last year and was told not to do it again and she has done it again this year, so the parents are going to sue. How do I go about finding a good teacher and an appropriate classroom without burning my bridges? I LOVE the SLP. She is also the augmentative tech lady for the whole school district. I will do whatever it takes for Hannah to continue with her. So what do you think ladies. This was just a revision meeting. The new IEP will be written up in mid March after feeding assessments are done. Let me know and thanks ahead of time. Blessings, a (Drew 12, Tourettes/OCD, Marissa 9, Middle-Child-Syndrome, Hannah 7 DS/Aut)

I don't know that Maddie will ever read (she is not even at the point where she comprehends verbal language), but we still have what I consider *academic* goals on her IEP. For her, they are academic (things like matching, trying to identify colors, recognizing facial features, PECS, touch screen computer work). But we also have other goals, like teeth brushing, putting on socks and shoes (which she can do now with assistance...WHEN she wants), as well as potty training and eating/dressing goals. We also have included social goals, since that is a particularly tough area for Maddie. <<How do I go about finding a good teacher and an appropriate classroom without burning my bridges? If this tech lady is the SLP for the whole district, why can't you switch classrooms and keep her as well? Are you talking about switching schools? Hey, my attitude is, you can ALWAYS ask/insist for what you want. What's the harm in asking? Donna
Guest guest
Hi a, Because I don't now Hannah it's tough to comment on goals. You didn't mention what her existing goals are. I can't understand why both educational goal and self help skills can't be incorporated. I would first look at her placement. You could ask for an AT eval to have computer assisted programing to meet her educational needs. Zeb's fine motor skills are not good either. We adapted what we could and help him in what he can't do. Charlyne Mom to Zeb 11 DS/OCD
