Hello everyone :)

Raven is transitioning from preschool to kindergarten in the fall. We are

currently in the process of discussing placement for next year. We did have

Raven's MFE this past Monday & the special ed supervisor really caught me off

guard on some things & I get the vibe there are going to be issues.

What kind of experiences have you all had? What did you choose: school

district vs. special needs school? Are you happy with your choices? Would you

have done anything differently?

Thanks in advance!!!

Annie.............mom to Raven (5 DS, PDD), Abbi (3), & Emmy (2 in 10 days!!!)

Hi Annie,

Your suspicions are probably right. You need to be more specific as to what

placement and program you want for Raven. What goals do you have in mind for

kindrgarten etc. My school issues started in kindergarten. I would not have done

anything different that I did because I fought them head on from day one. I

followed my gut instinct.

Annie,

This choice is very unique to each child and family. I am all for

inclusion, but it's not in the cards for Maddie right now. Her autism is very

blatant and we need to address that as her main dx. She does not do well in

social situations at all....matter of fact, she couldn't even handle a

cafeteria or playground. Yesterday I was super bummed because I told my 11

year old

that I could go to her school's skating party. But then Maddie woke up with

a cold so I had to keep her home from school. I took her with us and it

did not go well. The poor baby shook so badly, her heart raced so fast, that I

had to leave after only 10 minutes. Even Alison said, " Mom get her out of

here before she has a heart attack!! " .

I would recommend that you personally visit all your classroom options.

This is what I did before placing Maddie in a private school that implements

the ABA method. Visiting all the various classifications enabled me to

envision the right environment for Maddie. Once you do that, then you can

check

out the reputations of the schools and the teachers. I would also speak to

some of the parents who have children in each school. Also, many parents

choose to do a little of both...some sped classes and some classes in regular

ed.

Sometimes, you try something and change your mind...or see that it's not the

best academic place....a lot of it is play as you go, unfortunately.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Donna
