Guest guest
is there a reason why they wont pursue a dynavox system for seth? Does he do the pics? has he been doing stuff to lead up to such a system? Im sure he probably has as nathan did, ppic symbols typing etc voic pal, compu talk, go talk and now the springboard which is practically the same as a dynamite a liltte easier i felt and iwoa city also liked the idea of us or brother putting our voices in insted of the computer voice as on the dynamite, the cost is pretty much the same, the school kept dleaying this for nathan too and no one in the community understands him very frustrating, so we are doing it privately through iowa city and our insurance and his medicaid. School is willing to incooperate this in his speech goals, just unable to purchase one, and we even changed his goals to a rubric type of thing he gets so many points ofr talking and being understood talking and not being understood talking not being understood verbally but able to point out or show them what he is saying so thus being understood and then also if not understood voice wise or pointing out wise and he uses his augmentive device with and then without prompting. This rubric is better becasue he hasnt been able to meet any speech goals no matter how we all brainstorm on reachable goals for him. He started talking around 9-10yrs old but mostly just a word or two, and we were only ones to understand and he does talk much more but not conversaytionwise mostly requests for stuff but at least in 3 or more word phrases, but we are the only ones who can understand him most of the time but there are still often we dont it took most of last summer that what sounds like rotwiller is actually library, lol. I know many of nathan programs also tie into the whole pecs system, he always has used boardmakeer pics and picture this at school and stuff too. i will pray hard for seth to get what he needs. shawna. yep, it figures > Well, the district did it again! Guest guest
Well, the district did it again! Now I get a note from Seth's speech therapist saying that she's not going to pursue the Dynamo the team had all agreed upon. Said she was going to look for something less expensive and that maybe my family reimbursement money could cover it. Needless to say, I'm ticked off and feeling VERY stupid. They got me again and I'm sick of it. I can't imagine doing this for another 13 years of Seth's education. Not to say that another communication device would not work, or may even be a better choice. Feeling more ashamed of myself for falling for their games, I guess. Another notch in my districts belt. Tell them they are violating the law???? Sorry dear, but don't blame yourself. {{{{{hugs}}}}}} Donna

I know that I spoke to you privately about this but the list needs to know that you just don't take this laying down. The speech therapist made a big mistake by putting this in writing. The decision for an augmentive device was decided in a PPT meeting. The team agreed on a specific device to meet Seth's needs. The educational need is not based on the families need for funding reimbursement. What ever happened to a free and appropriate education? A very thought out letter to the speech therapist and pupil service director of intent will change things around. You can and will pursue Seth's rights to the fullest under IDEA.
