, My son also has the extremely red chapped cheeks. My doctor

gave him a prescription for Elocon. I put it on at night and it works wonders.

You have to just use a little bit though because it can temporarily lighten the

skin where you apply it if you use too much. Hope this helps. Terry

I feel like such a nag but this was our experience. JJ always had red

cheeks. We treated it with Bag Balm(great stuff). We never made a

connection between the cheeks and JJ's diet. After the dx of Celiac

Disease and changing to a gluten free diet we no longer have red

cheeks. So think about testing if you haven't yet.

My son Ethan use to live on carrots and sweet potatoes. He had an orange tint

to him. I was told by a professional (I am pretty sure it was our genetist)

that people with Down Syndrome are more susceptible to the " oranging " effect of

the beta carotene. Is his diet rich in the orange colored foods? Just a

thought.

Thanks ne,

Well, LOTS of V-8 juice, Beef-A-Roni, and yogurt. That's about the extent of

his menu. LOL Was Ethan's tint just on his palms and soles?

used to have a red chapped face all the time along with a dry scalp

and constipation. These are all symptoms of hypothyroidism. She was not

treated because her levels were near normal. Once I demanded she go on

synthyroid, all these symptoms disappeared. Now the levels have been

revised. Turns out with the new levels she has always had low thyroid

function.

I am pretty sure they use carrots in Beef-a-Roni for coloring. and V-8

will do it too. Have you tried making smoothies for fruit? JJ will

not go near a banana but put it in a smoothie--he loves it. And fruit

and veggie are not his comfort foods.

Hi ,

Yeah, we offer it to him every time we make one. The only fruit he will eat

is in yogurt, and ONLY Creme Savers yogurt. LOL No fruit there! LOL He got

a yogurt maker for Christmas, that I haven't tried out yet. Hoping that I

can make some healthy stuff that he WILL eat. Fruit and veggies are not my

comfort foods either! LOL

Thanks,

Gail :-)

Thank you Irma, actually Noah has never experienced a single ear infection. He

has been on antibiotics for a total of 5-6 times for colds that have lasted

longer than 2 weeks. very healthy little guy. We were thinking on stating

Noah on Nutrivene but still trying to research on that . Today we completed our

workshop for Noah's home ABA/AVA program. We are really excited because he

responded so well. Having lots of trouble finding therapists. One backed out

the eve of the workshop and the other today so We now only have one part time

person until we can find someone. Thank you for all your support and oodles of

information .

Re: red cheeks

Hi ,

Hope Noah is feeling better. Has he been experiencing lots of ear

infection or upper respiratory infections? Given antibiotics. I'm

not a doc but almost sounds like a yeast overgrowth, it could happen

in the gastrointestinal tracts. This is only if he has been

experiencing ear infections or upper respiratory infections.

In a healthy gut, bacteria, yeast, and other fungi exist together

and aid the digestion process. However, when a person takes

antibiotics to fight an infection, the balance of these is

disturbed. Good and bad bacteria are killed off with the antibiotic,

while yeast organisms are not. With the good bacteria diminished,

yeast organisms become more abundant and in turn release more toxins

in the body that can damage the central nervous and immune systems.

This cycle of using antibiotics allows for extensive yeast

overgrowth. This was part of my notes from an Autism Medical

conference awhile back. Can't remember which doc Dr. Crook,

author of The Yeast Connection or Dr. Shaw that were

speakers at this conference.

Have a medical professional do some kind of antifungal test, test

for yeast overgrowth, etc.. Google search Yeast Connection, leaky

gut, or Candida Albicans.

I know this is part of my sons culprit. My son experienced numerous

ear infections and upper respiratory infections and has always been

given antibiotics. I believe it has weaken his immune system. My son

will be undergoing these test now that I found some experienced

medical professionals willing to work with him who are following the

DAN protoccol. I won't go into it too much so if you get a chance

google search the info mentioned above.

If you would like to know if there is a food allergy. You could try

to eliminate dairy products for about a week or two if possible. The

next food item would be sugar than wheat, corn, etc.. The first week

or two should give you an answer if you notice any changes. Contact

your doc for the allergy test and let him know of the results of

your trial, so that he could work with you on this. Keep a journal

of his food intake, observation of behavior or just any responses.

Good luck on this journey. Thought I share this info.

The red cheek is common on some kids with DS, Aquaphor by Eucerin

has been a great healing ointment too for it.
