Guest guest
Terry, Our gastroenterologist said that spitting up after around 15 months is not normal and is reflux. Brook was 3 when we started looking into it for him. Not all kids have the same symptoms. Brook didn't aspirate or cough. But he did spit up after eating and drinking, like what you said about . Marisa, Yea, that's exactly when Maddie started. I breast-fed her up until she was 15 months and started her on milk....then it hit. Guest guest
Thanks Marisa, What did they do about the reflux? also was diagnosed with epilepsy 1 1/2 years ago and now my biggest worry is keeping the seizure meds down. He takes 2 medicines 3 time a day each in liquid form. I watch him like a hawk for an hour after each dose to make sure he doesn't spit it up. It' a little nerve wracking. Guest guest
Hi Terry, I remember worrying about the seizure meds a lot too before Brook had the Nissen. Brook started having seizures around the age of 1 yr and didn't have the Nissen fundoplication until his 4th birthday. I think we tried to give him the meds at times separate from when he ate, because he spit up after eating all the time. Brook had all the tests for reflux, biospy, 24hr pH probe, upper GI, etc., he did have lesions in his esophagus that were very painful. That led to self-injurious behaviors. We tried the meds and they didn't help enough, he really needed the surgery. He had the Nissen and a feeding tube for about 12 weeks or so and we used that for venting and for feeding him when he had his tonsils out. He also had ear tubes. Brook can't tell us when he is in pain, so I really like it that he has ear tubes and has had his tonsills out. The doctor who took out his tonsils when he was 4 said that they were heavily scarred which means that he had had a lot of episodes of tonsillitis, we were definitely at the doctor's office all the time. All of these medical treatments helped him tremendously in a variety of ways. Before the surgery he was miserable, didn't want to eat, had a lot of behavior problems, etc. Afterwards his health was much better, his self-injurious behaviors went away and he started eating better. Brook's seizures went away for a couple of years and then they returned, now he is on Lamictal, his neurologist thinks that he has outrgrown his seizures again but I am really not convinced. He also takes .75mg of Risperdal TID, which has helped a lot with his water obsession and other behavioral issues. I am a strong believer in fixing medical problems to help with behavioral issues.
