SO Gail dear, how'd it go?

Donna

Well, I *THINK* it went well. Mostly because Seth's caseworker was there to

back up everything I said. Although, the teacher didn't *recall* the timeout

episode of missing an entire gym class. It was the aide that told me about

it, so maybe the teacher wasn't there that day. Was funny, one by one, as

everyone came into the room, they asked about Seth's coloring. We came to some

agreements about eating issues, touch screen, wearing glasses, timeouts, having

the school tech person come and decide what kind of screen Seth needs and a few

other things. His ppt meeting is Feb. 12th, so I have some MAJOR work to get

started on here. YIKES!!!!!!!!!! One thing I wanted to ask you Donna. Seth

has a hard time transitioning from one thing to another, even if it's

something he enjoys. Everyone has started using sensory bins to help him adjust

when

he transitions. Everyone but the PT. She gets on the floor and rough houses

with Seth. (His fav thing to do) Should she use a bin too, or is rough

housing appropriate for PT? He climbs on her back and uses her for a slide,

positions her the way he wants her for climbing on and they roll around and just

play for a few minutes. I don't allow the climbing at home, but dh does. Seth

knows dh is the ONLY one he is allowed to climb on. My instincts tell me it's

okay for her to do this, because it's PT and because he's understanding who he

can, and can't do it with. BUT, I don't know what the long term *side

effects* will be. What do you think?

Thanks,

Gail :-)

Gail,

My opinion is that if it works, do it. As long as Seth knows WHO and

WHEN, it doesn't matter. Maddie KNOWS who to climb and who not to (Dad, little

Joe and Jen let her). Shows you how smart our kiddles are!!! We use the

pics for Maddie to transition (and she always has a comfort/transition item with

her...usually a dangly) and I ask that they give her LOADS of time to process

what they want from her. BTW, *I* think it's important for kids to have

that person they can rough house with!!!!!! They need that wrestle time with

someone who knows how to do it (other kids get hurt or get too rough and don't

know when to back off, sides, Maddie won't let most kids wrestle with

her---except for Alison that is...she constantly amazes us...I swear, she'll be

the

one to grow up and be a special ed teacher or therapist)

Glad to hear you guys did some brainstorming at the meeting. Although

teacher's ignorance about the entire gym class time out ticks me off!!!!! Did

she at least acknowledge that it DID indeed happen? We use a daily log

book Gail, that the aide, OT and teacher write in each day, to give me a heads

up

on what's going on. Never miss a day!!!! I like that because it's WRITTEN

(read, PROOF). Maybe you could have a back and forth daily thing like that?

Donna,

No, the teacher never acknowledged it at all. That's why I'm assuming she

wasn't there. We have a daily log book, but usually only one person writes each

day, unless there is something going on with one of the therapists. The time

out was never written in the book. The aide just told me about it during one

of my observation days.

That was my instinct, to let him rough house with the PT, but these days I'm

second guessing myself, and I don't know why. LOL Seth uses the pics to

transition, he gets to where he's going okay, but then he has trouble starting

whatever it is. Even if he likes it. I think it is a behavior and they need to

just start anyway and EXPECT him to start. Seems like they expect the problem

and don't really give him a chance to stop it. Does that make sense? LOL

Gail :-)

That's wrong right there Gail. It absolutely SHOULD have been written in

the book. Man, it's like they are protecting themselves.

Absolutely. They should just start it and let Seth jump in when he's ready.

Sheesh, not that hard to figure out!!!!
