Guest guest
Gosh Laurie, Sorry you got such bad news. Good thing is that it is a *fixable* huh? Can't wait to read your posts after he is a fixed up. Good luck and we'll keep you in our prayers. Any idea when they will do the surgery? Gail :-) Hi all well we are back and not with any good news it seems Mic has severe reflux requiring surgery I have to make an apt with the surgeon which is the doctor we met in the ER and I liked him alot.Plus the Gi dr wants Mic to have a deep rectal biop done to check for hirshsprungs and told me he could easily have both.I dont know why he keeps pushing this hirshsprungs since I have decided we just dont have room for HD too.Plus while they were looking at the xrays they came back and did more well Mics left hip the ball on the end attaching to the hip is half as big on one than the other the othro surgeon came down looked at the xrays for us and that will require surgery to fix.I feel like throwing up myself.Gotta go now will be back later Thanks everyone I am so greatful to have all of you in our lives. 's right; when it rains it pours. Maddie's reflux was never severe enough to warrant a fundoplication, but many on the DS listserv and on this list have had it done for their kids. No fun for sure, but you can console yourself with knowing that once done, Mic won't be in pain (GERD IS painful as well as life-threatening if not treated). I also have a friend whose daughter had the hip surgery...again, no fun, but once over, she was much better off. As says, you are up to snuff...You'll get through it. And we'll be here with the prayers and support and hold your hand (cyberly) through it all. Donna
Guest guest
Laurie, When it rains it pours!!! For reflux they would do a fundplication. Lay terms--they turn the stomach, take a loop in it. The reflux should be completely gone. And at the same time they place a g-tube unless he already has one. This procedure saved Tim's life. It is not a forever thing in everyone. Tim had his for 9 years. It took him a few years to get to eating babyfood, the continued to regular food. ' HD I know nothing about. BUT things at this point seem overwhelming to you. I am sure DS did at first also. Give yourself time to make the adjustment. I know that you will be researching and have been to educate yourself. I always try to remember that what I read is usually the worst case, things probably will not be that bad. We have all been there with one thing or other. We know that you and Mic can do it. > & Garry Parents to Sam 13 (DS), Tim 12(DS), JJ 10(Autism, DS, Celiac Disease), 9(DS, ADHD, Celiac Disease, Hearing Impaired), Esther 6 (DS) All Adopted

Hi Laurie, had a fundoplication [Nissen] when he was about 4. It was one of the easiest procedures he has had and it made a HUGE difference in his [and our] life! He is not constantly in pain from the refuxing and he isn't aspirating. Before the procedure, he was taking asthma meds, after the procedure he didn't need them anymore. No more aspiration pneumonias either!! He had a g-tube prior to the procedure so that wasn't new. I have known kids who had a fundoplication that didn't have a g-tube. Personnally, I would prefer it because they can't vomit [in theory] after the procedure so if they need to, without a g-tube you have a problem. With a g-tube, you just open the tube and empty the stomach. You can also relieve gastric pressure by " venting " the g-tube. had the Hirshsprung's biopsy before he was two. It was negative. He also had surgery for hip dysplasia a couple of years ago. The Ortho doc also rebuilt the hip ball/socket using donor bone grafts. Margaret's doc used a different procedure on Gareth. If you can go that route, it definitely sounds like a winner. The spica cast is no fun and if Mic needs that, there are some tricks that will make your [and his] life easier if you know them ahead of time. A spica cast is a full body cast. was in one for several months. I can definitely see a difference in 's walking now. He isn't speedy, but he doesn't limp the way he used to. The bad news for him is that the doc said at some point his other hip will need to be done as well. If I had it to do over, I would've asked them to do both at the same time. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Terry Mom to , 17 yrs.
Guest guest
Hi Laurie, I apologize for not checking my e-mail sooner. I have a few Zeb school issues and am trying to finish my quarterly taxes. The news isn't very good for Mic but it could always be worse. At least you have answers and all these problems can be corrected with surgery. I still find it hard to believe that the pediatrician didn't see any of this. I suppose better late than never. I hope the next set of testing will be negative for Mic's sake. Life will get better. Guest guest
Hi Laurie, Brook had the Nissen fundoplication right after his 4th birthday. We took advantage of the temporary feeding tube and had his tonsils removed the next month too. The Nissen helped Brook tremendously. His behavior improved a lot since he wasn't in pain all the time from the reflux, which had led to self-injurious behaviors. That was a really hard time for us, but things are much better now. Good Luck. Marisa
