Welcome Dave and . I am Donna, mom to Maddie (10, DS and autism).

Maddie is the youngest of five. Maddie wasn't dx'd with autism until she was

five years old, even though the onset was very apparent to us at the age of 2.

We ran the gammut of physical testing first, to rule out health issues. We

found some along the way (GERD, hypothyroidism), but the autism was still

blatant. Then of course, there's always that cushy denial phase.....;-)

You came to the right place. Go to the web site for this list and you will

find loads of information at your fingertips. Feel free to question us

about anything at all.....from behaviors to therapies, approaches and

treatments,

to meds, to effects on the whole family. We ALL know and you will learn that

this list is made up of the most non-judgmental, caring, helpful and loving

individuals you will ever *meet*.

Welcome again, and we're looking forward to hearing more about your family!!

Hi Dave and ,

A huge welcome. Glad you've noticed that there are other issues

going on in a way at his age while he is young. Continue to follow

your heart so that everyone could adapt to 's needs. Have

y'all had a chance to read the Disability Solutions Newsletter

written by our group moderator,(Joan Medlen).

Thanks to her she has open many doors for my son and I and has

brought many Dear cyberfriends together whom I am very grateful who

have given me strength and energy towards the challenges needed in

many ways. So welcome to this group and hope y'all will feel the

same way. :)

Hi Dave and ,

Welcome to our group. My son, Brook is 13 now, but your letter reminded me a

lot of him. He has a seizure disorder that developed when he was 1 yr. That and

GERD caused him a lot of problems. But he is doing much better now. What kind of

seizures are you dealing with? Brook had myoclonic and petit mal seizures. He

was on Depakote for years and is now on Lamictal. He also takes Risperdal which

is helping him a lot with his water obsession and behavior. He had a lot of

sensory problems, that have improved and was a terrible eater for a long time.

He loved to twirl and spin things when he was little, but doesn't anymore. He

loves music and plays mostly with toys that play music. He also is nonverbal,

but he has been doing well with PECS, picture exchange communication system, but

still takes our hands to lead us to what he wants when it is easier. He mostly

uses PECS for his food preferences. Let me know if you have any questions I can

help you with.
